130th Anniversary Saxophone (41)
This is how this very special instrument is described by Dave Kessler on the Kessler & Sons website:

130th Anniversary Saxophone from Selmer Paris
Limited Edition Tribute to Adolphe Sax

Celebrating their 130th Anniversary, Selmer Paris has paid tribute to the father of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax. This extremely limited production instrument is designed in the true homage of the vintage saxophone while merging with modern design in the 130th Anniversary model.

In the past, Selmer Paris has offered many different Limited Edition horns (Millenium Model, “Tribute to Bird” Series, etc…) that have, for the most part, been nothing more than cosmetic changes to existing models (different engraving, unique finish). With the 130th Anniversary model, Selmer Paris has designed a unique instrument that is not like anything that Selmer Paris has made before.

While it is true that many parts on the 130th Anniversary sax are shared parts with other models of Selmer Paris saxophones, there are an outstanding number of truly unique parts that were made exclusively for this tribute model. From the octave mechanism to the unique bracings, truly custom keyguards and even the all metal finger touches, the 130th Anniversary model is a truly unique saxophone worthy of being called a “Limited Edition”. This model was further rounded out with the use of white pads without resonators, paying tribute to the original saxophone designs.

This model was further rounded out with the use of white pads without resonators, paying tribute to the original saxophone designs. Don’t let that dissuade you. Normally, resonator-less saxophones tend to play overtly mellow and a hair stuffy… but not this horn! Selmer is using a unique, modern pad that is far firmer than traditional pads. This helps the entire pad absorb less acoustically while reflecting more tonally out. This horn is big, rich, mellow and resonant while having impeccable response and intonation! This is absolutely one of our favorite saxophones ever created!!

SeleS Axos (15)
When Selmer Paris announced this horn a couple of years ago, there was much speculation and many rumours about it. Hopefully the following information directly from Dave Kessler—whose family business is a Selmer Pro Shop—will set the record straight:

To respond to the ever-changing needs of musicians, Henri Selmer Paris has created the new brand SeleS. The SeleS brand provides a range of instruments adapted to various budgets. To do this, Henri Selmer Paris has invested heavily in research and development which has allowed the company to streamline their manufacturing process and to standardize certain procedures. The company has also invested in new manufacturing tools in order to optimize production time. Furthermore, external industrial collaborations enable Henri Selmer Paris to offer a larger range of instruments.

Instruments made using the recent technological and industrial innovations will appear under the brand SeleS, created for this occasion by the Selmer Family. The Henri Selmer Paris brand will still continue to be wholly manufactured in the Mates-la-Ville factory using the Selmer Paris tradition.

Description

The SeleS line of instruments from Selmer Paris were designed to offer legendary Selmer Paris performance at a more affordable price point. Selmer brought in new manufacturing techniques and established outside manufacturing partnerships in order to achieve this goal. The “core” of the Axos is pure Selmer! It has a wonderfully rich tonal center with excellent response, projection and intonation.

The outside manufacturing partnerships (though Selmer keeps the details closely guarded) are done to provide quality with affordability. Even the most experienced technicians will struggle to identify which parts are Selmer made and which are done through these partnerships. First and foremost, the Axos is a French Made Saxophone. This is NOT an Asian made saxophone as many might believe.

The quality of the Axos is in line with the top end Selmer Paris saxophones. It’s performance style sits in between the Series II and Series III saxophones with a lighter response than the II and a thicker center than the III. All in all, the Axos is a marvelous achievement and exemplifies the Selmer Paris sound.
