Description: Bb Bass Ophicleide
Manufacturer: Kelherman
Source: Wichita Band Instrument Company on eBay.com

According to the seller, this Ophicleide is circa 1850. They were almost finished refurbishing it when they listed it on eBay. According the WBIC: "Ten brass keys, everything on the body also all brass. New pads & corks, flat springs original, others are new."

The ophicleide was invented early in the 19th century Jean Hilaire Asté—a French instrument maker. He received a patent for his invention in 1821. This horn, which has keys like a woodwind, but the cupped mouthpiece of a brass instrument, is related to a saxophone in that it too has a conical bore.
