These C-pitched instruments were built in the early part of the 20th century and allowed saxophone players to double on oboes without having to learn oboe fingerings.
They have basically the same fingering system of saxophones, and could be played with either a double reed—like the one shown with this saxoboe that appeared on eBay—or the player could also use a saxoboe mouthpiece, which used a single reed. This of course meant that the player also didn't have to learn how to play a double reed. |
