This is now the 3rd Modell Lus JK I have seen (all 3 are now in this gallery) and each has had different key guards. By far and away these are the most ornate. This horn is also the only one that appears to be plated.
Note the soldered tone holes on the sax. (They may even appear to be bevelled, it's hard to tell for sure in these small photos.) This is because this saxophone was built by the Keilwerth Company shortly after it started operations in Nauheim, Germany in 1947. Because the family was forcibly moved from Graslitz, and each member of the family was only allowed to bring along a max. of 50 kg of luggage, the business had to start anew. Therefore in the beginning, JK didn't have access to a machine that could draw tone holes.
According to German saxophone dealer Bluespeter1 Saxophone Ladbergen (the seller of this sax), these Lus models were built only in very limited numbers, and that "Lus" was the nickname of Julius Keilwerth. |
