These quirky horns pop up occasionally. There is no information available about them that I have found to date, and even sax historian Pete Hales—who has a great deal of knowledge of French brands—has little to offer up on these horns.
It's hard to say how old these horns are, since some French saxophone models sometimes had fewer features than their contemporaries. For example, this horn has very simple key work (no front F, bis Bb, side C, chromatic F#), is only keyed to low B, and lacks an automatic octave key. It also lacks rollers on the right and left pinkie keys.
While it would be easy to say that this horn is from the late 1800s—and it might be—it might also be from the early 1900s. Pierret also made horns similar to this, while at the same time making horns with full key work and an automatic octave key. |
