According to saxophone historian Pete Hales, when the Selmer Co. bought the Adolphe Sax manufacturing plant from Adolphe-Edward Sax, they used it to manufacture a line of saxophones that they sold primarily in the UK. These horns were intended to compliment the Super models that Selmer was selling at the time.
These saxophones had 2 serial numbers: a Sax number on the bell, and a Selmer number under the low D key or on the body near the thumbrest.
Pete is of the opinion that although these horns were more expensive than other pro horns of the time, they were less expensive than other Selmer horns. This led him to believe that these horns were aimed more at the intermediate market—especially considering they were eventually replaced by the Pennsylvania model. |
