Front F Key Mechanism
Description: Bb Tenor
Manufacturer: Martin
Model: Handcraft Phase 1
Submodel: Super-Fine
Serial #: 22160
Finish: Gold plated with ornate bell engraving
Source: Randy Cole on

This very interesting Handcraft is somewhat of an enigma. While it has the characteristic straight tone holes of a Phase 1 Handcraft, and the horn fits into the serial # charts as a Phase 1 horn, it doesn't have the name Handcraft engraved anywhere on the horn. Furthermore, there is a strange front F key built into one of the hinge tubes, which is really odd, since Martin didn't add a front F to their horns until the Phase 3 Handcrafts.

This sax was no doubt a custom order from the Martin factory (those initials engraved are likely those of the original owner), but what about the front F? I'll leave that to you to ponder.
