This mysterious JK horn caused quite a bit of conversation on saxophone forums. Yes, it really is a Julius Keilwerth, but no, it doesn't have rolled tone holes, a model name, nor a serial number.
This sax has bevelled tone holes, similar to Martins. According to sax historian Pete Hales:
"Beveled tone holes were available on Keilwerths right after WWII. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Keilwerth was trying to model their horns more on Martins than Conns. While this may or may not be true, Keilwerth had several models with beveled tone holes: not only the Modell Lus (couple more horns in my gallery at http://thesax.info/gallery3/index.php/Keilwerth/Lus), but The New King “Series II,” like http://www.saxpics.com/?v=gal&a=2049. The fun thing is that I’ve seen the “Series II” with both left-hand bell keys and right-hand bell keys — and with a variety of shapes for the G#/C#/B/Bb cluster."
As far as what kind of JK it is, it seems to closely resemble a King model tenor that Gerhard Keilwerth sold a few years ago.
The seller stated in an email, that the horn had no serial number. I'm wondering if it was perhaps a prototype, or some other kind of one-of. Whatever it is, this sax clearly came from JK's Graslitz period, prior to the company's move to Germany post WWII. |
