Bb Bass
Manufacturer: Conn
Model: Transitional New Wonder (14M)
Serial #: 253XXX
Finish: Nickel plated
Source: samashcalifornia on eBay.com
This sax—like all transitional horns—has features from both the New Wonder and the Artist series.
Among other things, from the New Wonder it has:
-Nail file G# key.
-Right-sided bell keys.
(In bari and bass saxes the split bell keys were switched to right-sided ones by the end of the New Wonder run already.)
From the Artist series it has:
-The famous "Naked Lady" engraving.
Note that the horn is keyed to high F; has a bis Bb, and has a sink trap neck. When it comes to vintage bass saxophones, this really is the holy grail. The 14M keyed to high F, is what most players want, but are not able to find/afford.
Since Conn never developed an Artist style bass, this is the most Advanced bass saxophone that Conn ever built. According to Saxpics, the 14M bass was discontinued 1941/42 (serial # 300XXX). Only special order bass saxes were available after that. This horn is circa 1932. |
