Description: Eb Alto
Manufacturer: Selmer
Model: Balanced Action
Serial #: 21XXX
Finish: Lacquer (Relac?)
Source: Schmitt Music Online on eBay.com

This horn is interesting, since it was being advertised as having belonged to coming from the Dr. Eugene Rousseau collection.

The reason I question the originality of its lacquer is simply that: 1. It's too perfect, 2. The engraving is a touch too faint on the bell, and 3. The lacquer colour is too light for a Selmer from this era. At this point one would expect the original to be a dark, golden honey colour.

It is quite possible the Dr. Rousseau sent it off to Selmer for a relac at some point. Although if Selmer had done the relacquer, I would expect them to re-cut the engraving, and use a darker kind of lacquer—more authentic to the period.
