Norway’s Kristen Sevaldsen

Yesterday I was poking around through YouTube, and I happened to come across the video Mountain Dance by Norway’s Kristen Sevaldsen. I don’t know about the rest of you here in North America, but I’d never heard of her.

Kristen Sevaldsen comes from Lillehammer, Norway. Her MySpace Music page, categorizes her music as Electroacoustic / Rock / Visual, and when you listen to her 6 songs, you hear such a variety of genres, that you are left scratching your head. Smooth jazz, funk, jazz, and new age are all equally well represented. However, the tag line from her website really says it all: Saxofonist fra Bach til beats. Which translated roughly would mean: a saxophonist from Bach to the modern beat.

Her band’s main website, which is only in Norwegian, shows her to be playing all saxes from soprano through to baritone, but tenor does seem to be her primary horn. Besides being a musician, Kristen Sevaldsen is also a composer and a producer. She has been playing saxophone for 20 years.

According to her blog post of September 5, 2008, Sevaldsen and her band performed here in British Columbia, at the Kaslo Jazz Festival. She only brought 60 copies of her CD with her, and those sold out in 30 minutes after the show. This apparently caught her completely off guard; she didn’t expect that.

She is hoping to tour more in Canada in the future. Now that she’s hit my radar screen, I hope she does. My only question is: How did the Kaslo organizing committee hear about her?

Kristen Sevaldsen’s sax playing is stellar, and I think quite inspirational for young would-be performers, especially woman. Young women who play saxophone have such few role models. Here is one that seems quite “real” & “authentic”; which in today’s over produced & commercialized world, is a true rarity.

In any event, I hope you you enjoy the Mountain Dance video. The cinematography is quite amazing, as is the setting.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!
