Tomorrow I’m going to do something I rarely, if ever do. I’m going to a jam session. The band that’s hosting it was thrown together for a few weeks as a temporary house band for a new Blues club that opened up in an old church.
The Church of The Blues, at least I think that’s what it’s called, is just getting going. It will have live bands on Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon & early evening, those same bands will host a jam session. Deception, the Blues band I work in, will be playing there on November 29th & and hosting a jam on the 30th.
Until the owners of the venue get a regular group of bands in rotation, they have this temporary house band that hosts a jam on Sundays between 3 & 7 PM. The drummer (Gary) & the bass player (Steve) from the house band are actually from Deception.
The last time I went to a jam was in the last millennium I think. It was in Fredericton, at an Irish Pub, maybe Kelly’s? I don’t remember. It was a long, long time ago.
I’m just happy to see that a new live music venue has opened up here in the Fraser Valley. This area is a wasteland of nothingness with regards to live entertainment. Abbotsford, well, let’s not even go there. If it weren’t for Diane of the Gourmet Gallery, there would virtually be nothing going on around here. Mission has a few more offerings, but overall, given the population of the area, I find the whole live music scene incredibly depressing.
The new venue is the former Dewdney Pub I believe. I’m going to get more information including the proper name & exact address tomorrow. This will allow me to update the Deception website.
In the meantime, if you like Blues music, and you find yourself with some free time tomorrow afternoon. Come on down the the Church of The Blues (?) between 3 & 7. If you’re coming from Mission, head east on the Lougheed Highway (Highway 7), cross over the railway tracks, and then it’s your first right on River Road. I hope to see you there.
