A Sunday Evening At The Church Of The Blues

Yesterday I went to the jam at the Church Of The Blues, at the Historic Dewdney Pub. Art (the guitar player and founder of Deception) and I went there together for an enjoyable evening of Blues music by some very talented musicians, including the amazing Gerald Charlie, who fronts Gerald Charlie and the Black Owl Blues Band.

When we got there around 4:30 the parking lot was full, and we could see that the place was jumpin’. The house band was on a break, so Art & I quickly put our gear together and got it on stage. As it turned out, Art had made arrangements to play a “mini set” as Deception, as a promo for our upcoming show at the club there at the end of November.

After the house band played 4 songs in its next set, all of the members of the house band not in Deception (the 2 guitar players) and the 1 fellow jamming with them on tenor sax, left the stage while the drummer (Gary) and bass player (Steve) stayed. Art and I got on stage, and we then did 30 minutes of playing. A keyboard player stayed on with us, so for that 30 minute set, Deception was a 5-piece band.

After Deception did its thing, Gerald Charlie assembled a pick up band, and did a 30 minute set. I had never had the pleasure of hearing this man sing. His vocals are amazing. After working with Art these last few years, I’ve gotten so used to his style of Blues guitar playing, it was interesting to hear Gerald’s. It was such a different style. Again, it was a pleasure to hear. Speaking to Gerald after his set, it was refreshing to meet such a talented musician with such a grounded personality. I hope to see him with his regular band sometime in the near future.

As it turned out, I didn’t participate in any of the rest of jam. After Gerald’s set, Art & I finally had a chance to eat dinner. Although Dave, the man who fronts the house band, had told me I was welcome to join them for any or all of the evening on stage, I was pretty tired, and my balance problems were wickedly bad yesterday in the new, visually overloaded, & noisy surroundings.

When I wasn’t using my cane, I stumbled around really badly…Mind you, so did half the bar patrons, so I don’t think I stood out a great deal. I figured I’ve got a lot going on this week (medical appointment wise), so I shouldn’t push myself too hard. I know from experience if I had done more yesterday, I’d be paying for it for days this week, and I can’t afford to do that.

I do have one lingering question about yesterday though: What happened to that tenor sax player who came to jam? He had just gotten on stage and played 3 or 4 songs with the house band before Deception took the stage. I was hoping to talk to him. I think he was playing a new Yamaha, or something like that. When he left the stage, I was trying to make eye contact with him, but wasn’t able to. While we were playing, he wasn’t sitting at his table, and then I noticed he and his friend leaving from the other side of the club, at some point during our set.

So if you, that mystery tenor player from The Church Of The Blues on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, happen to stumble across this post: Who are you? Where are you from? Why’d you take off so quick? I would have liked to talk to you and said “Hi, my name’s Helen. What’s yours?”.

Please drop me an email and let me know where you’re from and a bit about yourself. There are so few of us around, especially out here, (sax players in general, and Blues players specifically) we should at least get to know each other. And don’t forget, Deception will be playing at The Church Of The Blues on November 29th, and hosting the jam on the 30th, so I hope that you can come out for that.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!
