A Frustrating Morning

This morning did not go as planned. I had a plan. However, as so often happens, it got derailed by technology.

I have spent over 2 hours screwing around trying to get the comment editor to work.

I did a software update without checking it in my test blog. :?   I really do know better than that. The result? The plugin that allows you to edit your comments for an hour after you post them, stopped working.

So 2 hours, a lot of trial and error, and a clean install later, I discovered the problem was related to IE 9. I got the software working in Chrome with no problems, and made the tweaks I needed to, but it took a lot of time and research to figure out where the problem originated from.

I just checked, and you can edit your comments in IE 9. IE 8 shouldn’t be a problem, since that’s the version of IE that the comment editor is designed for. (As well as Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and I believe Opera.) The problem appears to be localized in the back end of the software, and only because I was using IE 9 at the time.

Technology. Can’t live with it, and now a days, can’t live without it.

No wonder I feel like doing this…

The worst part is, I still have 4 software updates to do…

And yes, I will be trying them on my test blog first. :P

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

  1. Hi Helen
First, let me thank you for your blog. It is a tremendous help for us old guys with GAS. I told you I’d give you a report on my latest gas attack. I also have, according to my wife, this compulsive thing. I play in quite few bands from community to swing. Even have my own Dixieland band “8Up with Dixie”. I take an hour and half lesson every week from Randy Hunter jazz trying to get better. I’m nowhere near a pro, just an old toot having fun with music. .I play (at) most all of the woodwinds and do quite a bit of subbing. The assortment looks like this:
Soprano—Allora intermediate (Ok, will get you by in a tight)
Alto——-Old Buscher Aristocrat ( with high dollar Otto link mouthpiece really like)
    Tenor——Buffet Super Dyno ( just absolutely love it}
Bari ——-Buffet (one of their bronze new one, really enjoy playing)
Contrabass clarinet–Leblanc (ship horn on a long metal stick)
Bass clarinet—Yamaha (use it in community bands, it’s the plastic one but ok)
    Bb clarinet—Selmer 1947 N (love it so much I have two !!!!)
I’m gonna quit listing STUFF, man , I do have a disorder !!!! On to the latest fix. I listened to Andreas and Deep Schott “bass sax quartet” and thought , I gotta have one of THOSE. There’s not a lot of those things to choose from. E-bayed and searched for 3 months. Read and re-read every article at you massive blog site. Finally wound up with Orpheo from Pro-winds for under four grand. As the mans says, you pays your money and you takes your chances. When the horn first arrived I was soooo sick. Completely unplayable and a wreck but to the guys at Pro-winds credit. They asked for a chance to make things right. I shipped it back at their expense and when I got it back was pleasantly surprised. Took it to my pro “Randy Hunter Jazz” and with a little tweaking played from top to bottom with pretty good intonation. From Bb to F# with good mouthpiece it came with , I’m able to pop most of the tones pretty good. I’m a happy camper. Most of the trouble occurred in shipping. Case just is not sturdy enough to handle from Ill. To Ga. Then back to Ill. Then back to Ga. Just got case back from luggage repair shop.
Thank you for introducing me to Andreas in Germany. The bass now sits on one of his stands. It’s awesome !!! Arrived 13 days after it was shipped !!!!
Again thank you. It helped me make a pretty informed decision. Now if you could just direct me to help for my GAS and obsessive disorder( tooting music every day !!!)
I’ll try and make this thing send a picture

    • Hello Rett.

Thank you for your kind words about my site, and the update on your musical exploits. You’re a man after my own heart. G.A.S. obsessed and all. ;)

First up, I’m really happy to hear that Pro-winds stepped up and did something about the bass that they sent you. It does make me wonder though, how many of the American-style, Asian bass saxes were sent out in almost unplayable shape. My guess is quite a few.

Yours is not the first story like this that I have heard. The other players who have bought bass saxophones did not, IIRC, buy from Pro-winds. One I remember very clearly, bought their bass from a story in the UK, under a different stencil name. It too of course though, was a Jinyin-made bass.

I’m glad you got one of Andreas’ stand. They are great aren’t they? I don’t know if you know this or not, but he also makes a cradle for baritones. The base is the same, only the top portion gets swapped when you play your bari.

I have an email in the works to you, but since I’m painfully behind at the moment, and things are looking like they might get slowed down even more, I thought I’d better at least catch up with you here.

Take good care Rett. And again, thanks for checking in….helen

Oh, and about redirecting you to something less G.A.S. and obsessive disorder related, that I can’t help you with that my friend. It’s an affliction many of us share. Although, I believe we are in fine company. :D
