Over the weekend I happened to come across an interesting article written by travel writer Wade Shepard, in the travel blog Vagabond Journey. The Bamboo Saxophone Busker, is a very nice piece about a saxophone player in San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico.
Now in case you’re wondering what this instrument might sound like, check out this clip from YouTube. It is of Malcolm playing one of his bamboo saxophones.
Now if that doesn’t convince you that much of the sound of our horns comes from the shape of the bore, rather than the material of the instrument itself, I don’t know what will.
Oh, and in case you were wondering what the price was on this interesting bamboo saxophone, Malcolm offered one to Wade Shepard for just under $50. Not a bad price at all. Think about that the next time you go to drop $500 on a mouthpiece that has the name Hollywood or New York stamped on it.
