A Deceptively Funky Blues Band

Last Friday night Deception played at the Gourmet Gallery, and we had the pleasure of seeing some new faces in the audience this time around. It was really nice to see the crowd intently listening to the music. I also had the pleasure of playing for some very dear friends who had not seen me play with Deception before.

When Don and Carroll decided to renew their wedding vows 3 years ago, they hired my Bassic Sax Jazz Ensemble, which is still on hiatus, to perform at their wedding. Since then, Don’s MS has been complicating his life to the point where we thought we were going to lose him many times… The most recent was just 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, Don is much like the Energizer Bunny, and just keeps going, and going…

He and Carroll were able to arrange a later than normal evening out on Friday, so that he could come out and hear Deception play. It was wonderful to be able to play for Don. As a former keyboard player, he very much appreciates the time, effort, and work that goes into the music that we perform.

Don was even able to enjoy a beer while listening to us play. Rather a rare treat for him these days.

Carroll also enjoyed the evening out. Although she regularly came to hear the Bassic Sax Jazz Ensemble when we played every Thursday at the Yorkshire Rose, she too had never heard me play with Deception.

Also there that evening was my friend, Jane Perrett, Soprano. Don’t for a minute think opera singers are stiff and rigid, because Jane is as crazy as they come. Here she is clowning around, and hamming it up for the camera during one of my solos in our last song of the evening, After Hours, by Boz Scaggs.

But without a doubt, Deception’s Most Loyal Fan Award has got to go to Sharon Panchishin. Art Panchishin, Deception’s founder, and Sharon have been married for over 35 years. Sharon comes to most of our shows, and she likes to quietly sing along with the music. Here she is… Caught in the act…

All in all, it was a great show. We had a lot of fun, and the audience seemed to really enjoy the performance. We have one more show at the Gourmet Gallery before the summer break. Our next show there will be on June 12th.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!
