A Pop Sax Solo From The 80s: Waiting For A Star To Fall

If any of you are old enough to remember the 80s, you might recall that it was a decade full of pop songs that featured sax solos of varying lengths. This morning, as my clock radio woke me up to one of those memorable tunes, I started to think about all those great—and not so great—songs from the decade of excess, that featured our instrument.

So with Super Tramp’s The Logical Song fresh in my mind, I decided that it would interesting to see how easy it would be to find 80s songs on YouTube that featured sax solos. As I suspected, it wasn’t hard. As a matter of fact, it was too easy. The plethora of choices was so great that I became overwhelmed, and couldn’t figure out which to choose for today’s post.

In the end I chose a tune that was simple and upbeat, and by a band—that like so many—seemed to fade out of existence in the blink of an eye.

Boy Meets Girl’s Waiting For A Star To Fall, seems to have been a prophetic title for what would become of the band’s music career. None the less, this tune is firmly entrenched in the consciousness of those of us who came of age in the 80s.

For us, Boy Meets Girl will live on—as will the sax riff that intros the song, and the solo that comes right after the bridge.

A few years ago SOTW Columnist John Laughter compiled a list of Billboard hits that featured sax solos. Many of us at the time contributed to the list, and I believe I still have it somewhere on my hard drive.

I think it would be interesting to revisit some of these solos of the past decades. This is something that I’ve been doing on my weblog already. However, I’d like to make it a more organized and logical feature. With the amount of new videos added to YouTube regularly, finding some of these memorable hits from the past is getting easier and easier.
