Another Example Of The Saxophone Used In Popular Dance Music

Last week in my article about Katy Perry’s #1 Billboard hit, Last Friday Night—which features Lenny Pickett playing the sax solo BTW, not Kenny G, as he only appears in the video—I mentioned that other pop songs had been using saxophones in the past year. Although the artists might not be as well known worldwide as Perry, their music is still wildly popular in their home countries and regions. One such artist is Romanian singer, Alexandra Stan.

Bucharest-based Stan released Mr. Saxobeat in late 2010, and in the summer of 2011 the song found its worldwide audience. The song was #1 on Billboard’s Dance Airplay chart, and topped iTunes charts all over Europe.¹

Not only does the song feature a sax riff throughout, the track itself is called Mr. Saxobeat. What’s not to like about that? It’s also a great dance track.

The embedding feature has been disabled at the artist’s request, but the link from the play button will take you to the YouTube video. By all means watch it. You’ll enjoy it. Trust me guys. 😉

  1. Hi Guys. I’m sorry I’m so far behind in replying. I’m up to my ass in alligators at the moment. I thought when the sunroom was finally finished the work would be over. Hah! The work only started for me afterwards. 😯

Mmm… Mechanical you say… Gee, don’t know what to think about that, my alto playing sounds just like that. 😉 Seriously, mechanical style aside, I produce this sound very easily with certain reeds, and a particular embouchure. With my effects pedal it’s even easier to get this sound, since I just turn a dial, step on my pedal, and “poof”… Instant electronica sound.
