There used to be a townhouse complex in my neighbourhood in Fredericton, NB, that had a sign like this…

Maybe I was the slow one, but it took me a while to realize that the sign wasn’t referring to the IQ of the children in question. 😉 😆
I started thinking about all the signs that I have catalogued in this blog, that use our iconic instruments in some way to convey something. When it comes to street signs, our horns are most often used to tell musicians not to busk. These signs might look something like this, or perhaps something like this.
So I’ve decided that it’s time that we saxophonists take back what’s rightfully ours, and reclaim the images of the saxophone on signs. It’s time that we create our own signs, and display them proudly.
Today I am unveiling my first second (the first one was bad) attempt at such a sign. It was of course inspired by the slow children playing noted above.
Anyone who has ever played with, or played a bass saxophone, will see the humour in this sign. (Just think back to what it was like when you first started playing your bass—especially if it’s a vintage American one! )
Over the next while I will be rolling out more of my own saxophone signs. I have a bunch of them percolating in my head at the moment. As far as this sign is concerned, I’ll be tweaking it as my skills with the software improve.
If you too would like to participate in this activity of creating saxophone signage, the more the merrier. I will gladly host any signs that you come up with. Just send the file to me in an email. You’ll be given full credit, or not, depending on your preference.
