While looking through a couple of the videos that saxophone player Bert Brandsma, from the Netherlands posted on YouTube, I came across this really informative one on bass saxophones. He compares a 1921 Martin (Conn stencil) to a 1940 Conn 14M.
I learned a lot from these 8 minutes. As always, his playing is a source of inspiration to bass saxophone players everywhere.
Bert is very nice guy. I’m pleased that I have the pleasure to be able to correspond with him regularly through the Bass Sax Co-operative. Anytime Co-op members have had questions, he’s jumped in with informative answers. There seems to be no end to his knowledge of bass saxophones.
Just an interesting aside, he is perhaps the busiest bass player on the planet, with over 130 bass saxophone gigs per year for the last 3 years. No word on if that contract was renewed. I hope so. That is one hell of a record! I think he would be in the running with, if not surpassing, the amount of bass sax work done by Adrian Rollini.

Hi Bert!
It’s my pleasure to include your bass videos. They’re a great teaching tool.
Great news on the bass sax show contract front! I hope you’re keeping a travel diary, because I think your bass saxophones should have their own blog, where their travel stories can be posted.
Seriously, Bert…I’m thinking “Travels With A Bass Saxophone” by Bert Brandsma…This has a lot of potential…Give it some thought (for a book I mean).
Hi Helen!
Nice that you included this video on your site.
Our contract is renewed, but only second half of the year, so we’ll do something more than 60 performances for them. But besides that we also have a lot of shorter events like tours to Portugal and the United Kingdom.
So I will play defenitly more than 100 bass sax performances again this year.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
