Since I joined Deception in ’05, I’ve played our arrangement of Spooky. Our version is based on that of the Atlanta Rhythm Section.
Recently I decided that I would try and find the original version of Spooky—the instrumental version performed by sax player Mike Sharpe. Well thanks to YouTube I found it quickly and easily.
Spooky was written by Mike Sharpe and Harry Middlebrooks Jr. It originally charted in 1967 in the US, and hit #57 on the pop charts.¹
Although it is much better known as a Classics IV song when lyrics were added in 1968, Spooky was originally a saxophone solo. How ’bout that.

No, I am sorry I don’t know.
Hello: Well, thanks for at least letting me know I wasn’t totally crazy. I recall the instrumental version of “Spooky” when I was in college, but either didn’t know or forgot that it was first released as an instrumental. I just now tried downloading an MP3 instrumental version from Amazon, but it wasn’t THE song I was looking for. Worse, the version was boring. Would LOVE to find out if there was anywhere to download an MP3 version, but that doesn’t sound likely. Thanks for clearing up the history of this song.
