What’s The Freeway Looking Like Where You Live?

One of my favourite songs from the 80s was Aretha Franklin’s Freeway of Love, from her 1985 album Who’s Zoomin’ Who? The song won her the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and became Franklin’s 15th Top 10 pop hit in the United States. The song peaked in the #3 spot in Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.¹ You might say that Freeway of Love became one of Aretha Franklin’s anthems for that decade. It certainly was a dance club staple.

Undoubtedly some of the elements that always attracted me to the song were the strong saxophone lines and the solo by Clarence Clemons. Clemons, who just recently passed away due to complications from a stroke, was of course a charter member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

Until I found this video on YouTube this morning, I don’t remember seeing it in the last 25 or so years. It’s a nice flashback to my youth. Ah yes, the 80s… The decade of big hair—when many women and men had dos that resembled those of standard poodles. 😉  😆
