During\u00a0my usual trolling of eBay listings,\u00a0this unusual vintage\u00a0tenor caught my eye yesterday: a\u00a0professional model La Monte<\/a>,\u00a0that wasn’t\u00a0made by Orsi for\u00a0change.\u00a0Instead of being Italian, this\u00a0sax is\u00a0in fact a combo of Dutch and German\u00a0in origin.<\/p>\n

This horn is located in France, and the seller has written the ad<\/a> mostly in French. I’ll let you have the fun of entering the ad copy into the web translation service of your choice, since the ones I picked, were\u00a0all pretty funny, and quite inaccurate. Here’s what the seller wrote in English:<\/p>\n

Tenor saxophone. Keilwerth body, assembly in Holland by Schenkelaars, in the sixties.\u00a0Pads are good and recent. No leaks, recently adjusted, and in playing condition. Dark and smooth sound with my mouthpieces (Selmer soloist, Otto Link rubber and supertone master). [Mouthpieces are not included.] Some minor dents showed on the pictures, and some minor soldering works on the post,and octave mechanism (see pics). Keyworks like the Conn 10M. Rolled tone holes.<\/p>\n

The case is old, and the locks are not functionnal, but it will protect the sax during the shipping. Additional pictures on request.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n

Since this is a Keilwerth-made body tube, I’d be\u00a0very curious to know what this horn would sound like\u00a0next to the D\u00f6rfler\u00a0& J\u00f6rka (D&J)\u00a0horns, that\u00a0of course all had the Keilwerth body tubes as well, and were of the same vintage.<\/p>\n

The auction for this Schenkelaars-made La Monte Superior ends in just a few hours from now. At the time of writing there were 17 bids on the horn, with the high bid being \u20ac300.00, which according to eBay, is approximately $450 US.<\/p>\n

BTW, Doctor Sax has a very similar, if not identical, horn for sale currently<\/a>. The brand name on that vintage tenor is Concord Artist.\u00a0The selling price of that sax is $750.<\/p>\n
