Not being content with a simple, plastic model, <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Home-Made-Sax.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">like the one made by this fellow in Brazil<\/a>, I decided\u00a0to check what I might learn on-line about making a saxophone out of metal.<\/p>\n<p>Well the ever-entertaining ehow\u2014providers of <em>useful<\/em> advice such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/?p=18355\">How To Correct A Bent Baritone Sax<\/a>\u2014certainly didn&#8217;t disappoint. This time the site provided us with the 6 steps necessary to make our own saxophones.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/how_4866768_construct-saxophone.html\" target=\"_blank\">How to Construct a Saxophone\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Before you begin, you need to assemble the items that you&#8217;ll need in the construction of your saxophone. Make sure you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brass tube<\/li>\n<li>Sulfuric acid<\/li>\n<li>Stainless steel screws and springs<\/li>\n<li>Cork for the joints and keys<\/li>\n<li>Hard rubber for the mouthpiece<\/li>\n<li>Lacquer<\/li>\n<li>Tapered mandrel<\/li>\n<li>Drill press<\/li>\n<li>Felt or cardboard or leather pads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OK then, now that you&#8217;ve got those <em>few<\/em> <em>little<\/em> items in your workshop, let&#8217;s begin&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>1. Start off by placing the brass tube on the tapered mandrel. You&#8217;ll want to heat it to make it more flexible, and then reshape it. After you&#8217;re done, clean it with sulfuric acid.<\/p>\n<p>Do you think they might have suggested protective gear when working with sulfuric acid \u2753<\/p>\n<p>2. Now you&#8217;ll have to use\u00a0a die, and shape the brass tube in it to match the\u00a0curve of the saxophone you want to build. You&#8217;re going to need &#8220;highly pressurized water to shape the brass to the die by forcing the water through the tube.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now is it me, or have you too noticed that there are a few things missing off the &#8220;items needed&#8221; list?<\/p>\n<p>3. Next step is to drill the tone holes. If you&#8217;re using a modern machine, it will create a rim around each tone hole. However, if you&#8217;re using an older-style machine, you can use what&#8217;s called a pulling-ball. Now you can clear coat the finished tube with lacquer.<\/p>\n<p>Same comment as above. It seems to me that we&#8217;re missing an item off our list.<\/p>\n<p>4. It&#8217;s now time to make the keys. You&#8217;ll have to to either die-cast them, or make them out of sheet metal. Polish them in a tumbling machine, or by hand. Another option is metal plating, which increases their durability.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, if only I&#8217;d asked for that tumbling machine for my birthday, instead of a new camera! Darn. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>5. Now you have to fit the springs, pads, and screws to the finished keys. Attach the keys to the saxophone &#8220;by mounting them on small posts screwed into the the main body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Did I miss something here? When exactly did they tell us to make the posts? Oh well, it&#8217;s just a minor detail. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p>6. Attach the brass neck and hard rubber mouthpiece\u2014both of which are made separately (and we won&#8217;t bother writing about, because the rest of this is BS anyway)\u2014and any other remaining fittings. &#8220;Line the joints with cork or wax to ensure they fit together as smoothly as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now here are a couple of tips &amp; warnings for you Do It Yourselfers:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/speechless-smiley-021.gif\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"19169\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/2010\/how-to-make-a-saxophone-all-by-yourself-um-sure-whatever\/speechless-smiley-021\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/speechless-smiley-021.gif?fit=15%2C25&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"15,25\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"speechless-smiley-021\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/speechless-smiley-021.gif?fit=15%2C25&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19169\" title=\"speechless-smiley-021\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/speechless-smiley-021.gif?resize=15%2C25\" alt=\"\" width=\"15\" height=\"25\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Test the saxophone now to see that it plays properly. (What are the chances?) You can test it by playing it to see if it has a good sound. Too bad that one was put at the very end of the article.<\/p>\n<p>I just want to know: How does a person become a writer for ehow? What kind of knowledge must\u00a0one possess? How does\u00a0one prove\u00a0one&#8217;s credentials? Oh, and most importantly, how much do writers get paid? I&#8217;d like to sign up, because I think I could write something just as comical regularly.
