His playing style has influenced me more than anyone else&#8217;s. And if you know what you&#8217;re listening for, some of his playing elements and licks can be heard&nbsp;in my solo work.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I found an amazing video from 1977 that features Gato Barbieri and Carlos Santana performing Santa&#8217;s classic instrumental hit, <em>Europa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In&nbsp;this rare video&nbsp;you will hear what makes Barbieri such a powerful performer. It sent chills down my spine. This is a man who can do with a tenor, what David Sanborn does with an alto. Coincidentally, both performers use a Selmer Mark VI.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carlos Santana &amp; Gato Barbieri -  Europa (live, 1977)\" width=\"1174\" height=\"881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mr4IQRMzk6w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Barbieri&#8217;s use of split tones, multiphonics, altissimo, and other advanced techniques, were what drew me as a young saxophonist, into the area of saxophone study. Today I have those techniques under my belt, but I&#8217;m always striving to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Gato Barbieri. The music of your <em>Caliente!<\/em> album inspired me like no one else before or since.<\/p>\n<p>How about you?
