\nA recent thread on the Woodwind Forum<\/a> prompted me to write something that I think is worth sharing here. A player who very recently got his very first saxophone, already had a tonal concept, and was looking for gear advice to help him achieve his desired sound.<\/p>\n

While I think\u00a0having a tonal concept when\u00a0first starting out is\u00a0great, and shows a level of maturity, it can also be an\u00a0impediment to learning the basics<\/em> of playing saxophone.\u00a0Because let’s face it, to use a\u00a0hackneyed expression: We all had to learn to walk, before we could run.<\/p>\n

So in an effort to help this player wade through the well-intentioned advice he was getting, I put together a list of what a new player just\u00a0starting out should do.
