For your consideration today, we have some saxophone art\u00a0by\u00a0S.D. Kogan.\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Kogan specializes in musical instruments, and other “found art” which he arranges and transforms. His website, Musical Transformations<\/a>, is\u00a0an\u00a0interesting read, and a\u00a0virtual, visual\u00a0treat for\u00a0your optic fibers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the artist<\/a>,<\/p>\n

[his] original goal was to give these instruments a “second life”, to re-establish their functional status as “living” objects by transforming them into something new, something that was not originally intended. For example, a lamp might be created by attaching a clarinet to a base at the bottom, and a glass at the top, and running a wire through it. The result regularly triggered people to take a second look with puzzlement or curiosity, a sensibility that was often transformed to amusement when they figured out what was “going on”.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Well looking at these pieces, I certainly was puzzled and curious. However I must admit, I’m not sure I\u00a0truly figured out was was “going on” in all of them. How about you?<\/p>\n

I have respect for Mr. Kogan. Rather than turning a\u00a0fine, vintage saxophone into a run-of-the-mill table lamp, (you all know what I’m talking about<\/a>) he has transformed these old instruments,\u00a0that were destined for the\u00a0metal recycling heap, into functional art.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also, according to one of on-line galleries<\/a> that feature his work,\u00a0“a portion of every purchase is donated to the Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund, dedicated to assisting musicians in need of health care, shelter, and food”. <\/em>And in the words of Martha Stewart, that’s a good thing.<\/p>\n
