The other day I was reading Bret Pimentel’s blog,\u00a0and I came across a post of his simply titled,\u00a0Breath Support<\/a><\/em>. As I mentioned in my comment to him, it is without a doubt, the best article I have read on breath support in wind instruments.<\/p>\n

Much like Steve Goodson’s explanation of resonators and how they work in a saxophone<\/a>, which I mentioned in a\u00a0post\u00a0a few days ago, what makes Breath Support<\/em> so good, is that the definition that Bret has provided,\u00a0is easy to\u00a0understand and grasp.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Breath support is the engagement of the abdominal muscles (including the sides and lower back) during exhalation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That’s it. That’s all.<\/p>\n

I’m a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. method of teaching. Bret’s is not only an excellent definition to use with your students, but also an excellent example of how a rather complex concept, can be made simple, and easy to understand.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0makes\u00a0his article work really well, is that Bret touches on some of the myths of breath support that we’ve all heard (or perhaps even still believe\u00a0ourselves)\u00a0for example, breath support comes from the diaphragm.\u00a0He then concludes by briefly\u00a0mentioning some of the other problems that can\u00a0be cleared up when proper breath support is used, things like poor intonation & saggy tone.<\/p>\n

While there are certainly longer & more detailed articles about breath support out there, this is a great intro.\u00a0Moreover,\u00a0just as\u00a0importantly, it provides a great working definition, as well as model\u00a0for how teachers can\u00a0simplify difficult concepts.<\/p>\n
