{"id":33390,"date":"2012-08-20T10:57:23","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T17:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/?p=33390"},"modified":"2024-06-02T09:41:36","modified_gmt":"2024-06-02T16:41:36","slug":"classic-1980s-tv-theme-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/2012\/classic-1980s-tv-theme-song\/","title":{"rendered":"A Classic 1980s TV Theme Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re old enough to&nbsp;remember the 1980s, then there&#8217;s a good chance that you&#8217;ll remember the police drama&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cagneyandlacey.com\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Cagney &amp; Lacey<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;As a teenager I was glued to the set, to see these&nbsp;two, strong female, lead&nbsp;characters&nbsp;in a&nbsp;television landscape, that was primarily shaped by men&nbsp;as dramatic leads.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Sharon Gless&nbsp;and Tayne&nbsp;Daly as lead actresses, the other<em>&nbsp;hook<\/em>&nbsp;the show had for me, was its theme song. Every week I had to tune in early, just to make sure I didn&#8217;t miss the amazing sax&nbsp;solos. Solos, as it would turn out, that were&nbsp;played by none other than saxophone greats, <a href=\"http:\/\/raypizzi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ray Pizzi <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erniewatts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ernie Watts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RAY PIZZI Alto Sax &quot;Cagney and Lacey&quot; TV Theme by Bill Conti (no Bassoon)\" width=\"1174\" height=\"881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pBZmqVr5Zo8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to thank Ray Pizzi for reminding me about this song. I had no idea that it was available on YouTube. Thanks Ray!<\/p>\n<p>This&nbsp;is one of the classic&nbsp;1980s, saxophone-driven, TV theme songs\u2014perhaps even the first. Ray, your playing was an inspiration to me.<\/p>\n<p>I was working on high harmonics (Ted Nash book), at the time, and was struggling to get control over those high bends and scoops. I recorded the theme song with a cassette tape, and then kept going over and over it, until I was able to play along\u2014albeit far from perfectly\u2014with the recording of what sounded like an alto and&nbsp;a soprano sax to me.<\/p>\n<p>All that practice eventually paid off, and in time I did gain the control I was after in the&nbsp;high harmonic range. To this day some of my signature sounds&nbsp;are altissimo squealing, bending, scooping, and falling.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks Ray. Thanks Ernie. Like I said, you 2 were an inspiration to a young saxophonist starting out.
