If you live anywhere in North America, you&#8217;ve likely seen the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Phoenix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Pheonix<\/a> ads meant to attract you to their online studies&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"University of Phoenix Commercial - 2013\" width=\"1174\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T5rLZLGz65k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Seems a bit hokey to me. Why not go to a school whose purpose isn&#8217;t to make money for its share holders, and whose tuition rates won&#8217;t put you in the poor house for the rest of your working life?<\/p>\n<h2>Private schools then<\/h2>\n<p>That said, were things really any different back a century ago? How were things directly related to our saxophonic interests? The best part of all, saxophonists are paid &#8220;high salaries&#8230;for short evening work in orchestras.&#8221; Geez&#8230; Where can I get a gig like that?&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/icon_scratch.gif?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"251\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/2011\/the-crown-saxophone-tone-modulator\/icon_scratch\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/icon_scratch.gif?fit=20%2C20&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"20,20\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"icon_scratch\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/icon_scratch.gif?fit=20%2C20&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-251\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/icon_scratch.gif?resize=20%2C20&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I don&#8217;t see the saxophone and related books and supplies that would have been necessary, any different than the course books and materials used by today&#8217;s students in private universities and technical schools. The Holton saxophone was the tool the students required to learn their skill.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d be curious to know just how many of Kesselman-O&#8217;Driscoll&#8217;s saxophone students went on to become professional players. Sure, this was the height of the saxophone&#8217;s popularity, and bands and orchestras were using sax players everywhere. But just how bad did a player have to be before they were too bad to play professionally?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had lots of adult beginner students. Not one of them would have been good enough in only a few lessons to play professionally&#8230; Or perhaps I just suck as an instructor.
