(It should be noted that this is the first MK horn that I have ever seen. Until this horn, I didn&#8217;t know for sure he even made any baritones.)<\/p>\n<p>Max was the younger brother to Julius Keilwerth, and like his older brother, Max built saxophones before WWII in Graslitz, and after the war in West Germany. Max&#8217;s horn&#8217;s are generally known to carry the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>His <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/version5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Pure-Tone-Logo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pure Tone Trade Mark<\/a> stamp located just above the serial #;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/version5\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Alto-Serial-No.-1223.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rolled tone holes<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Right-Side-Neck-Attached1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Man in the moon<\/em> neck braces<\/a> on certain models of tenors and altos;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Neck-Right-Side.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microtuners<\/a> on most altos and <a href=\"https:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/pix\/picture.php?\/32761\/category\/13439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tenors<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>A particular <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Right-Thumb-Rest.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bell to body support brace<\/a> that he would later use on the Hohner President;<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/pix\/picture.php?\/32354\/category\/13389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nail file G# key<\/a> on his earlier model horns;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/M.K-President-Hohner-President-26XX-Right-Side.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right pinkie keys<\/a> shaped like those we see on JK horns;<\/li>\n<li>An <a listed above: the neck brace, bell to body support brace, nail file G#, as well the chromatic F# key. However, it also has some features that are quite different from other Max Keilwerth horns:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Beveled-Tone-Hole.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bevelled tone holes<\/a>. These are not completely uncommon in German horns. As a matter of fact, before Hohner introduced rolled tone holes, <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Right-Side.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the very first Presidents had bevelled ones<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Left-Thumb-Rest-Octave-Lever.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Left thumb rest &amp; octave lever.<\/a> The shape of these features looks more like what <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Left-Thumb-Rest-Octave-Lever-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julius used on his saxophones<\/a>, but Max did use this design as well on this <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Left-Side-Upper-Half.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Globemaster Luxus alto<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Bell-Key-Key-Guard.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bell key guard<\/a> does not look like anything I&#8217;ve seen before on Max Keilwerth horns, but it does look like those on <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/version5\/wp-content\/gallery\/f-x-huller-alto-on-ebay-sept-2010\/key-guard-detail-bell-key.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F. X. H\u00fcller saxophones<\/a>. And don&#8217;t forget, in the early 1920s, F.X. H\u00fcller began building saxophones under the guidance of Max Keilwerth. Therefore this type of key guard design on Max&#8217;s horns should not come as a surprise.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Right-Palm-Pinkie-Keys.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">right pinkie keys<\/a> are not shaped like the usual MK ones.<\/li>\n<li>What is perhaps surprising, is the <a href=\"http:\/\/bassic-sax.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Serial-No.-3673.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack of a Pure Tone Trade Mark stamp above the serial #<\/a>. However, the Foreign stamping might explain this. I am curious who the ordering company for this New Brunswick International bari was. Where were they located? How foreign were they?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in all, this New Brunswick International bari is in fine shape. Given its age, it is surprising it hasn&#8217;t been beaten to sh*!, and is missing keys and posts. A couple of small dents are to be expected for any vintage horn, and given it&#8217;s a bari, its condition is quite remarkable. I always tell people when they buy a vintage sax to expect to drop $1,000 on a restoration, and this horn is no exception..<\/p>\n<p>The seller states the following about this unique, vintage Max Keilwerth stencil horn:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>New Brunswick International Baritonsaxophon-Max Keilwerth Stencil.<br \/>\nMuss wiederhergestellt werden und ist nicht spielbereit, hat einige kleinen Dellen, darunter eine kleine Delle hinter die Korpus-Becher-Verbindung.<br \/>\nDie Versilberung und die Art Deco Gravur sind immer noch sehr sch\u00f6n.
