For the player who wants the 10/10 early Selmer tenor, this is a basically mint vintage Selmer tenor. It is 100% original silver plate, which is amazingly nice-looking. It also includes a Hiscox case and a fresh, Matt Stohrer overhaul (Matt has a 2-year wait for overhauls.)

These New Large Bore / Super tenors have a huge, wide, medium dark tone that is bigger than any modern or later Selmer, and it is a sound that deserves to make a comeback today. I had some good players in the shop right when this horn was overhauled, and they both said it was the best Selmer they had ever played. It plays wider and more “Conn-like” than other Selmers, but it still is recognizably a Selmer, and the keywork feels familiar under the fingers for Selmer players, though the left hand pinky keys take a couple of weeks to get used to.

These horns are often called ‘cigar cutters’ but there are nearly no tenors with actual ‘cigar cutter’-like octave mechanism. Nevertheless, in my view, pretty much all the tenors from around 13xxx-17xxx play pretty similarly, though you start to see incremental changes in the details of keywork, neck receiver style, and logo stamping.

This beautiful horn was recently totally overhauled by Matt Stohrer, who is one of the best saxophone repairmen I know. Everything about it is just as nice as can be. No dents, no resolders, all mechanical work is done, all new pads, corks, and felts. There were a couple of very small dings removed in the overhaul. The overhaul includes a $120 set of reusable slightly-domed brass resonators. The setup is very nice, with even spring tension across the horn, and Matt’s excellent pad work feels “dry” and snappy under the fingers.

As a player, this horn is also just great. Big, dark, room-filling, flexible and just all around fun to play. It tunes nicely, and works well with a range of mouthpieces. This horn will satisfy even a picky player looking for something truly great. And it includes a $379 Hiscox case (or a BAM if you want to swap it).
