This is one of the coolest Mark VI altos that I have ever seen. It is an early “Sanborn serial,” original lacquer, American-engraved SN#141xxx, with vertical Mark VI stamp by the D palm key, AND it has low A, AND it has high F# (which I have rarely seen on VI altos of this vintage), AND it is in excellent physical condition. The tone is focused, medium bright, and rich, much like a 5-digit or early 6-digit alto, actually. The bell key tone is great as well. Low A speaks very easily and sounds great. I have been holding onto this for a while, and this is definitely a horn I will be keeping if it doesn’t sell. Besides being a top level collectible, it is also really fun to play.

It is hard to say how many low A Mark VI saxophones Selmer actually made. There is a longstanding rumor that the number was only 200. I suspect the number to be more like 1000, because I see 2 or 3 per year in the world come up for sale, but who knows?

There is some lacquer wear on the back of the bow, and just some normal play wear. It plays great on the current pads and needs nothing. The tone is focused, medium bright, and rich, much like a 5-digit or early 6-digit alto, actually. The bell key tone is great as well. Low A speaks very easily and sounds great.

It even comes with the original Selmer case with a larger area for the longer bell. The original neck is also perfect and has no damage. I have been holding onto this for a while, and this is definitely a horn I will be keeping if it doesn’t sell. Besides being a top level collectible, it is also really fun to play.
