However, I have developed a page which might lead you to the answer you’re seeking. If you have a question you’d like to ask me, check out the Please Read This page. Thanks!

Welcome to the 7th incarnation of Bassic-Sax.ca—now Bassic-Sax.info—home to one of the largest saxophone sites on the Net. all totalled, this site is well north of 50,000 pages! With new pages added almost daily by either myself or Pete Hales. Yes, you read that right, Pete Hales.

A new look for 2021

If you have ever come to my website over the past 15 or so years, you will likely notice that it is now completely different in colour. Yup, after more than a decade of having a dark and black backgrounds, I have opted for pale grey.

Why this radical shift? I will be straight up with you. It was not my first choice. However, I recently did some research on website preferences and found out how few people liked dark sites, and how it actually effected information retention rates.

Given my site is information based, I made the decision to change it to dark print on a light background. But if you prefer dark backgrounds—or like me suffer from photophobia and light backgrounds cause eye pain—then have no fear. Notice the moon icon in the left lower corner? That allows you to enable a dark mode setting. Is it perfect? No. But it is better than suffering through the light background that so more than 80% of web users prefer. Yes, us dark mode users are very much in the minority.

Bassic Sax Pix & The Sax.info Gallery are now one

Well known saxophone historian, and all around really nice guy, Pete Hales, and I have been working together on a number of projects for years. A few years ago when it became obvious that both of our websites would benefit from VPS space, we decided to become virtual room mates. The next logical step was to combine our efforts, and rather than duplicate much of the information in our saxophone galleries, we opted to combine our galleries into one large one. With that rather simple decision, Bassic Sax Pix & The Sax.info Gallery was born.

What you’ll find on the various sections of Bassic-sax.info

This website

Since my love is vintage saxophones, they are very well represented on Bassic-sax.info. I have focused a lot on European saxes, and specifically, ones of German origin. I’ve opted to write about the brand names that are rather uncommon, and for which very little has previously been written in English.

Bassic Sax is the home for definitive info on brands such as: Hammerschmidt, Dörfler & Jörka, the Hohner President, H. Couf, Max Keilwerth, Akustik, Weltklang, and B&S AKA Blue Label—just to name some.

Although my focus is vintage horns, certain modern, German horns are of great interest to me as well. In particular, the saxophones that B&S made post-unification were previously not well researched and written about. With the modern horns of B&S section, those too are now extremely well documented and illustrated on my website.

The Bassic Sax Blog

The Bassic Sax Blog—which some people have thought is a site unto itself—is really just a part of Bassic-Sax.info. As of December 31 2020, there are 2.144 published posts, in 67 categories, with 443 tags.

Bassic Sax Pix

The gallery portion of my site, Bassic Sax Pix, is a catalogue of images that Pete and I have chosen that represent some of the most interesting, unique, beautiful, or important saxophones ever made. As of December 7, 2020, Bassic Sax Pix is home to 61,615 images in 5657 albums, with many more on the way.

No matter how you look at it, that’s a whole lotta’ sax all in one place! And I am far from finished. As you go look through this, the main portion of Bassic Sax, you’ll stumble across sections that I’m still in the process of working on.

I sincerely hope you enjoy Bassic Sax, and just as importantly, find it useful. If you have any questions, comments, or input, please feel free to send me an email. A link to my email is located at the top, right side and bottom of each page of the site.

Copyright info

All the images on this site are copyrighted! I am very generous with my permissions, and I rarely deny those who ask me politely if they can use my images.

Navigational aids

In order to help you navigate your way around this rather large site better, there are 2 things to make your travels easier:

There are navigational breadcrumbs for you. You’ll find them in in the centre of the header image, just under the title of the page you are on. They will appear as soon as you leave this Home Page.

At the top right of screen you’ll also find a search button.

Plans for 2021

Whenever you change the look of a site there is A LOT of background work to do. I will likely spend the first little while of 2010 doing that. Once that is done, I will change the Bassic Sax Blog over to this new look as well.

I still haven’t finished my H. Couf Superba I and II pages. I would like to get those done this coming year.

After that, I would like to do something on B&S’s intermediate 1000 Series horns. Although there is really nothing in print available, I would like to add some picture galleries of the foreign-made Series 500 and 600 student horns as well.

As for my Bassic Sax Blog, that will continue as before, with interesting and topical articles as time permits. Gone are the days when I can write daily articles. The level of work required to maintain a website of this size is incredible, so much of the time I used to be able to spend in the course of the morning researching and writing an article, is now spent on maintenance. That said, I am however, really pleased with the quality of the articles that I have managed to produce over the past couple of years. Some of them have had the highest readership of any of the articles I published in the Bassic Sax Blog’s 12 year history.

And going along with this last point, I have for years been wanting to add someone to the Bassic Sax writing staff. I am in the process of doing that right now. I hope to have a couple of new people up and writing some excellent content early this year.

If you’re looking for a FAQ page, I don’t have one.
