Which do you have? How can you tell?

This Hammerschmidt saxophone update has been years in the making. This workshop located near Schönbach, in the Egerland region—located in the Czech Republic today—primarily made clarinets.

According to the company’s website, in 1910, Martin’s son Karl Hammerschmidt, took over his father’s business and expanded the company’s production to include recorders, flutes, saxophones, as well as woodwind accessories.

It should be noted here that it is unknown when exactly—or even if—Hammerschmidt made their own saxophones in Watzkenreuth. It is possible that they made the occasional one-off horn, but ordered special ones as stencils from other known saxophone manufactures.

Two very well-respected, German saxophone historians (Günter Dullat and Uwe Ladwig 1 ) both note that saxophones from these early days were likely stencils ordered from FX Hüller and Kohlert. (Evidence of this stencilling will be shown below.)

In 1934, Karl turned over the family business to the third generation of Hammerschmidts: his 6 sons. Willi, Erwin, Walter, Alex, and Otmar had all learned the trade of woodwind instrument maker. Also in 1934, Otmar was put in charge of managing a brand new retail store that was opened in Karlsbad. (A spa town in the west Bohemia region of what is now the Czech Republic.)

During WWII business activities and production were reduced to a bare minimum. After the war, nationalization forced the Hammerschmidt family out of West Bohemia, and like other musical families like the Keilwerths, the Hammerschmidts moved to West Germany in 1945, to start up their business anew.

The Hammerschmidt brothers settled in Burgau, located in the Swabian part of Bavaria, and immediately began rebuilding the company—and where it still operates today. It is in this location, that we know categorically that Hammerschmidt did build its own alto and tenor saxophones.

According to Uwe Ladwig, saxophone production in Burgau, Schwaben ran for approx. 30 years: from 1952-82.2 According to company statements, Hammerschmidt permanently employed around seven to ten saxophone makers, who manufactured everything themselves from the body to the finished instrument. Only small items such as posts were purchased. (More on that under features.)

Hammerschmidt only made alto and tenor saxophones

From circa 1952 to 1982 Hammerschmidt made its own alto and tenor saxophones in Burgau. Source: R-Inghilterra-Strumenti-Musicali on eBay.com

Which were better? Plexiglas or sheet metal?

Based on what I have seen in reviewing well over 100 Hammerschmidt-made saxophones from Burgau, it would appear that when the company made the switch away from ornate wire guards, both Plexiglas and sheet metal guards were used on horns simultaneously. Although in the early days sheet metal was mostly offered for their stencils horns like the Silvertone that they made for Sears, by Klingsor alto 01055, sheet metal guards were a standard feature on approx. half of the Klingsor/n saxophones that they produced.

As a matter of fact, in the 1961 company catalogue I was sent years ago, Hammerschmidt writes the following on their saxophone page:

…verdecter Klappenschutz aus Plexiglas oder Metall…

In English this means:

…key guards made of Plexiglas or metal…

This was just a line in a description. The key guards were not listed as an upcharge like the high F# or mircotuner was. In my estimation, Hammerschmidt saw both as the same, and likely developed them for a specific market (American) where Plexiglas wasn’t as popular. This was something that JK did as well. The metal version of the angelwing was originally designed for horns destined for export to the American market.

Catalogue from 1961

Finish options

Engraving styles

Neck styles

Neck issues on some horns

«Back to page 2

Hammerschmidt Klingson catalogue No. VIII from 1961 3

Before we go too much farther down the features list for Klingsor/n saxophones, it is worth it to (re)visit the vintage catalogue that lists the entire Hammerschmidt lines from 1961. Alto #032 is one of the first saxes built by Hammerschmidt. The reason it is listed in the stencil list is that the name Josef Hammerschmidt & Söhne appears on the bell. In all the research I have done on the Hammerschmidt brand, the name Joseph is not one that is listed anywhere. Furthermore, Neustadt, Aisch is located in a different part of Bavaria than Burgau is—where Karl Hammerschmidt & Söhne was located.

So who was this Josef Hammerschmidt and his sons whose name was engraved on the bell? How was he related to the rest of the Hammerschmidt family of instrument-making fame? No clue. Yet again the word enigma pops up. In nearly 20 years of researching the brand, it is worth noting this is the only Josef to ever appear in relation to musical instruments.

2. The second stencil is interesting because of all the Silvertone stencils that Hammerschmidt made for Sears that I have seen, all had the conventional Silvertone engraving on them that Sears ordered from all companies from Buescher to Keilwerth—except for this one horn. Tenor #01xx features almost all the regular Silvertone engraving, except the company put their logo on the bell as well. (Wonder how that went over at Sears when it arrived at the distribution centre? 😉 )

3. The third stencil is a great example of a Version A with all the bells and whistles sans a high F# and microtuner neck. The ordering company spared almost no expense, but couldn’t escape Hammerschmidt’s hammer. 😉

<div class="gallery-row" style="width: 1429px; Honestly, I wasn’t even sure that there was a Type 1a (plain brace with a ridge and old style ring) until I saw some recent, high resolution photos of the earliest Hammerschmidt-made horns. Therefore, I am not at all sure that I ID’d the necks correctly on the very old photos I have, or the photos I have from people who provided poor quality shots in their online auctions/requests for info, etc.

It needs to be remembered that these types refer to what can be seen, and are not necessarily related to any changes that the company made to its neck design. EG: changes that could only be seen when multiple necks are examined in person, and when both their external, as well as internal measurements are collected. In other words, just because a horn has a Type 6 neck doesn’t necessarily make it bad.

Yes, some Hammerschmidt-made saxophones just have bad necks

And now we get to area of Hammerschmidt saxophones that I do personally not like, and that has raised the ire of a number of people over the years. Why? I don’t know. Maybe because they are worried that the horns they’re selling are suddenly going to be undervalued, or won’t sell at all? But quite honestly that’s not my problem. I just write what I find in my research, and what I discover through my own experiences.

In the case of Hammerschmidt intonation, I have personally owned a tenor with bad intonation, and then discovered what the cause was through research—sadly after the fact—with my German, saxophone historian colleague, Uwe Ladwig.

In his book, Saxofone: Ein Kompendium, Uwe writes the following in German. (I’ve translated it for you below.)

The altos and tenors are not always very accurate in intonation, due to a design flaw in the neck: it was copied from an old neck made of soldered brass sheet. However, the new Hammerschmidt neck was manufactured from brass tubing that was hydraulically inflated. This meant that the external dimensions corresponded to the older model, but the internal dimensions were incorrect because the material was thick on the mouthpiece side, and thin on the socket side.

Source: Saxofone: Ein Kompendium, 5th edition, p. 177.

What does one of these necks look like? This is my former Klingsor tenor #043XX. It doesn’t look like there is anything wrong with the neck. And there in lies the problem. Even a tech specializing in vintage horns can’t spot the difference from looking at the outside.

Klingsor tenor 043XX with a Type 6 neck. This horn was so out of tune that I couldn’t play it professionally with any groups I worked in.

This horn was so out of tune that after having spent hundreds of $$ trying to get it fixed—and then out of desperation reaching out to Uwe and finding out that its cause was the neck—I left it sitting in its case for years. I finally traded it along with a number of other horns to a dealer who yes, knew its story, when I bought a vintage horn horn I had coveted for years.

When did Hammerschmidt change their neck construction

I don’t know when Hammerschmidt changed from soldered sheet brass necks, to hydraulically formed ones. I do know that over the years I have received multiple emails from people who ended up buying horns with tuning problems who all say the same thing: I wish I had Googled Hammerschmidt tuning before I bought.

The other thing to remember is that the Type 6 neck is one we see over a huge chunk of their production run, so it would be unfair to paint all Type 6 necks with the same brush. I know mine was stock with my 043XX horn. Unfortunately since the other Klingsor tenor (035XX) I got at the same time didn’t come with a neck, I couldn’t compare the two, and it’s not like there are a lot of these floating around that you can compare necks.

I am wondering if there is a way to visually see in the older necks, (a seam line on the inside ?) that would give us a clue type of neck we’re dealing with: soldered brass sheet, vs. hydraulically formed.

I have noticed people selling their Hammerschmidt-made horns with non-original necks. Most recently I saw alto 0447x with a Yamaha replacement neck, while tenor 033xx was sporting a JK replacement neck when it was up for sale last.

The takeaway from all this neck hoopla is really this: when it comes to Hammerschmidt necks their are no absolutes. Like all vintage horns these instruments changed quite a bit during their approx. 30 year production run. The phrase: caveat emptor needs to guide your purchase of this brand, as should: try before you buy. Otherwise you run the risk of getting yourself a piece of wall art, which is fine if you know ahead of time that’s what you’re perhaps doing.

3 By 1969 Hammerschmidt had made some changes to their saxophone lineup. According to a catalogue page that Uwe Ladwig published in his book, Saxophone: Ein Kompendium, they added the Keilwerth-made soprano and baritone (both low Bb and A) to their lineup, but dropped the sand-matt silver plated finish option for their horns. Although they kept the high F# as an add-on, the company also dropped the microtuner by 1969 as well.

Thumb screw

Post shapes

A theory

Octave patent

Left pinkie clusters

Trill & accessory keys

Front F

Key oddities

«Back to page 3

Thumb screw

Prior to Klingsor saxophones #700 and up, Hammerschmidt used conventional, right-pointing, neck fastening screws on its alto and tenor saxophones. Although D&J’s altos and tenors were copies of JK’s Toneking and The New King, one area where their horns can immediately be differentiated from each other is in post shapes. Keilwerth’s posts are 2 trapezoids stacked on top of each other, while D&J’s are cone-shaped.

I have always described the cone shape of the D&J posts like the game pieces of many German board games, such as Mensch ärgere Dich nicht. Hammerschmidt has similar (identical?) posts for its horns.

Given that we know Hammerschmidt made all the labour-intensive parts of their horns themselves, but did purchase small bits from other manufacturers (Ladwig, p. 177), it would track that D&J could have supplied them with their posts. They certainly look similar enough except for the post feet.

Helen’s crazy theory based on design features

D&J could also have been the supplier for the round thumb screw that fastened the neck. Comparing the thumb screw on my Hammerschmidt alto to D&J horns I honestly don’t see a difference in the mount of the screw itself.

When D&J began winding down its business in 1965, they apparently did sell materials it had in stock to others. Furthermore, there was a 2 year period of time (1966-67) that Josef Dörfler continued working before he officially shuttered the business and went to work at JK. It is conceivable that he was making parts for companies like Hammerschmidt during this time so that they had a stockpile to keep them going.

An octave patent, octave mechanism, and familiar key shapes

In October 2024, I wrote an incredibly long and involved article on the patent that Hammerschmidt received for its octave venting system. I don’t know why trill keys never caught on in a bigger way, and I don’t know why even modern European makers stopped putting them on their horns. Personally, I use my C/D and G# trill keys on my mid-century German tenors all the time.

For these images I used my former and current Hammerschmidt horns. I have good quality, detailed photos of the areas in question.

Trill & accessory key overview

It can get very confusing when looking at a mid-century German horn. Not all manufacturers put their keys in exactly the same place. For Hammerschmidt, it is even more confusing since the C/D trill and high F# key are located side by side, but opposite to what makes intuitive sense. The high F# is located below the C/D triller.

Version A tenor #03555 with sand-matt silver plate, and gold plated bell.

Right hand trill keys in detail

Note: Not all of these trill keys are seen on all saxophones.

C/D trill key

According to the 1961 catalogue shown previously, the C/D trill key was standard on Version A of the Klingsor saxophones.

G# trill key

According to the 1961 catalogue shown previously, the G# trill key was standard on Versions A & B of the Klingsor saxophones.

High F# key

According to the 1961 catalogue shown previously, the high F# was available for an upcharge.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="16114" data-permalink="https://bassic-sax.info/version5/?attachment_id=16114" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/bassic-sax.info/version5/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/trill-keys-in-detail-tenor-03555.jpg?fit=1500%2C1125&ssl=1" data-orig-size="1500,1125" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"2009","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="trill-keys-in-detail-tenor-03555" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Klingsor tenor #03555 Version A. Much like the Hohner President, the demand for these more expensive Hammerschmidt-made Klingsor/n saxophones waned significantly as players started to make the switch to Yamaha and Yanagisawa. This waning in demand is obvious when you look at the serial number chart.

In the last 12 years of production, Hammerschmidt made <1000 saxophones. According to Uwe Ladwig (p. 176), this was because during the last years of its saxophone era, the company used up old parts, and the partially assembled horns that they had in their inventory.

Hammerschmidt saxophone gallery

Pete and I have amassed what is arguably the largest online gallery of Hammerschmidt Klingsor/n saxophones and a variety of their stencils.
