Couf Serial # Chart

What really are the differences between the Superba I and Superba II Couf baritone saxophones? The short answer is: Not as much as you might think, and it all depends on when they was made.

H. Couf baris did undergo changes over the approx. 22 years that they were produced. It does appear that the earliest horns shared more with their JK cousins than latter horns did—as you will see below.

A quick disclaimer

Unlike the Selmer Mark VI bari—that had some very well documented changes over horn’s production run—very little is known at this point about the H. Couf saxophone’s design changes. To the best of my knowledge, the research I have gathered here is the first real attempt at collating relatively large amounts of data about this J. Keilwerth-made saxophone brand.

However, there are a number of limitations with this data:

The data gathered is based only on what can be seen in photos I have managed to find scattered across the Internet—or in a very few cases in person. This is especially difficult in baritones since many bari sales don’t include photos of all areas of the horn, or focus on areas that are of little interest when trying to establish the models’ evolution.

The quality and quantity of photos is often very limited for each instrument (sample).

Any changes not visible to the naked eye—such as bore dimensions for example—are obviously not known.

In some cases the sample sizes that I have been able to gather to date are so small, that I haven’t been able to conclusively draw any conclusions. There are simply not that many baris compared to altos and tenors.

Many of these were former school horns and have been badly abused over the years. Parts are missing, and often the horns are sold as parts horns.

For all these reasons this page continues to be a work in progress. Over time, my hope is to fill in the missing blanks. If you can help in some way, please do not hesitate to drop me a note. Thanks!

What does the term “intermediate” mean in Couf speak?

Herb Couf said:

There were three levels of H. Couf saxophones; Superba I, the professional line…. Superba II the intermediate line with many of the same features as the Superba I…

Source: Saxophone: Ein Kompendium, Uwe Ladwig. Second Edition, 2012. p. 59

That said, “intermediate” does not mean inferior, or not up to pro horn standards. The Superba II were built to the same level of precision that their Superba I cousins were. All intermediate means in this case, is that a few minor things were different. (Much like the only difference between JK’s pro and intermediate Toneking and The New King was the presence and absence of a high F# key.)

What’s interesting about the Superba IIs, is that the model doesn’t follow the same neat evolutionary trajectory that the Superba I does. Why? Since H. Couf has passed away I’m not sure we will ever truly know for sure. And unless someone invents a time machine and we can go back and talk to the man himself, we likely never will.

With all that in mind, it’s time to take a closer look at what makes a I a I, and a II a II, and their various phases and features.

Superba I Phases & serials

Phase 1 circa 1965

No serial numbered horn catalogued to date. Couf saxophones are known for their good intonation, here’s a fun-fact about the Couf bari: In about 1980, Herb Couf mentioned at a trade fair visit in Frankfurt that the originally-planned neck for the baritone was too long for him. He had Keilwerth shorten the neck by 1 cm, and deliver all new baritones with this shorter neck. Meanwhile the bari players who had such short necks on their horns, ordered the regular length ones because the intonation was problematic for them. 1

What year exactly Herb Couf made JK switch the neck length is not cited in Uwe’s work. Nor is there any mention in Uwe’s research when or if Couf switched back to the longer neck length. Given the popularity of Couf bari saxes, and the lack of intonation problems players have with them, we can only assume this was only a brief blip in Couf’s bari development, and is really only more a curiosity than a current problem for owners of these horns.

Based on personal experience, I can say with 100% certainty that my 61XXX Superba II bari suffers from no intonation issues.

1 Saxophone: Ein Kompendium, Uwe Ladwig. However, after researching the H. Couf brand for a decade, I have come to the conclusion that there likely wasn’t any significance.

The first horn I have catalogued with an German-styled Arabic 1 is #55760, while the last is #73xxx. This roughly tracks with that of the altos and tenors.

Why did the engraving ultimately switch entirely from 1 to I? I have a couple of theories, but theories are not proof. Ultimately it may well have come down to a decision by H. Couf himself—who was very involved in virtually all aspects of the horns that bore is name.

Phase 1 – features

Black plastic G# key touch

Pigtail brace: Single round metal bar with 3 point attachment

Bell to body brace: Single round metal bar

Clothes guard: 2 individual Lucite guards

Bow to body connection soldered directly

RH pinkie keys squarish in shape

No front E/F key guard

Adjustable metal right thumb rest

Latest (only) serial # seen to date: N/A identified through features only

Defining feature for Phase 1 bari

Other than the serial number indicating one of the first years of H. Although they are not the only vintage dealer who is fond of refinishing vintage horns, I have often wondered why the choose the methods they do. But I digress. Their choice of methods and materials sometimes make it difficult to determine what is original to a horn, and what’s been redone.

Such is the case with Couf bari #69250. Quite frankly, this horn makes almost no sense. I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out what was their rebuild of this [presumably] train wreck of low Bb baritone, and what might have made this instrument unusual from the get.

While it has most of the Superba I features, it is also missing a couple of key ones:

The chromatic F# key guard.

A front F key guard (which is not necessarily present on all Phase 2 and onward horns).

It is also missing part of its engraving. Based on the horns I’ve catalogued, we know that at some point towards the end of their production run Couf either added it, or offered it as as option. To date the earliest horn I have seen with this feature is #90739.

What we also know is that like on the Superba I tenor, the shape of the high F# key changed shape. The earliest version I have seen is the familiar semi-oval MOP key touch we know from both the alto and tenor Superba models, to an upright metal key.

Right pinkie keys

To date, all the horns with a high F# key also have the newer, rounder JK-style pinkie keys.

<div class="gallery-row" style="width: 1429px; Why? Don’t know. I do have theory though that I will mention below, but before I do it is important to note that at the time of publication—August 2025—I have only managed to collect data on 20 different Superba II baris.

Furthermore, although relatively complete, not all 20 samples provided me with the full 23 datapoints I am tracking on the baritones. As noted on page 1 of this Couf baritone section:

The data gathered is based only on what can be seen in photos I have managed to find scattered across the Internet—or in a very few cases in person. This is especially difficult in baritones since many bari sales don’t include photos of all areas of the horn, or focus on areas that are of little interest when trying to establish the models’ evolution.

The quality and quantity of photos is often very limited for each instrument (sample).

These are among some of the reasons I consider this model’s description more a work in progress, and will be updated as I find more examples in the future.

Theory

Couf stopped its development of the Superba II baritone in favour of its own Armstrong models.

As I was collating the data in my Excel spread sheets I noticed something unique to the Superba II baritones. The highest serial #’s on the Superba II samples I collected data on, were circa 10K less than their Superba I counter parts. However, combined with the Superba II’s lack of feature evolution, I decided to take a deeper dive into the Superba II’s supposed alter ego: the Armstrong Heritage series, as well as the Armstrong 3070 series. The reason: I began to wonder if Herb Couf—who was President of Armstrong after all—had decided to put the company’s $$ and resources into developing their own pro and intermediate levels of baritone saxophones, rather than relying solely on Keilwerth.

The more I looked into these different models from Armstrong, the less clear I got. Simply put: Contrary to whatever is being stated in the online world, the Armstrong Heritage is NOT simply a Superba II with a different name on it.

Of the samples I’ve been able to see, the Heritage looks more like a Superba I hybrid. And the 3070? It has more in common with the Superba II than the Heritage does.

What are all of these models of baritones? Why did Armstrong order/produce them? Perhaps my friend and colleague, Pete Hales, said it best back in the day on his original Saxpics site when he wrote:

…No, I don’t know why Armstrong had these models available at the same time as the H-Couf, nor why Armstrong had two virtually identical horns with different model names.

Source: saxpics.com

This all led me down the rabbit hole of more research I will need to do: Armstrong baritone saxophones vis-à-vis H. However, after researching the H. Couf brand for a decade, I have come to the conclusion that there likely wasn’t any significance.

Based on the research I have done to date, unlike on the Superba I baris, the Arabic 2 doesn’t appear until much later in the production run. The first horn I have documented an Arabic 2 on, is Superba 2 bari #71998. The last documented Arabic 2 is on bari #75207—which coincidentally all happen to be Phase 3 horns.

Why did the engraving ultimately switch entirely from 2 to II? I have a couple of theories, but theories are not proof. Ultimately it may well have come down to a decision by H. Couf himself—who was very involved in virtually all aspects of the horns that bore is name.

Phase 1 – features

Pigtail brace: Single round metal bar with 3 point attachment

Clothes guard: single piece of Lucite

Latest serial # seen to date: 55413

Defining feature for Phase 1 bari

Other than the serial number indicating one of the first years of H. Lucite guards are seen on JK horns during this period of time.

Keyguard variants on the Phase 1 Superba II baritones

Until now I have not mentioned keyguards for any of the H. Couf saxophones I have discussed because there had been no variations. All the keyguards in all sizes and models of Coufs that I have tracked have been the Keilwerth metal guard with the felt adjustment pad that was standard on Keilwerth horns at the time. The baritone had independent guards, but the design is the same.

When I saw the guards on these Phase 1 Superba II baris, I had to take a bit of a deeper dive into their possible origins, since neither looked quite right.

From left to right the following are illustrated below:

This is the standard JK keyguard we see on all sizes of H. The owner of the horn is a SOTW member and provided me with clear, detailed photos of all areas of the horn. He did mention that when he bought the horn back about 10 years ago, his tech did do some work on the pigtail since it was out of alignment. Looking at the photos you can see the solder marks where the parts were rejoined. This leaves us with two possibilities: 1. The horn never had any bracing there to begin with, or 2. Part of the pigtail was replaced. Either way, Superba II low Bb bari #733xx is again what one would call an enigma.

Many thanks go to the following people:

I want to acknowledge the incredible work done by Steve Sklar.
