A Slovenian Sax Pub

When I first saw this Slovenian Sax Pub on Flickr a few months ago, I immediately was taken back to some of the streets of Europe I used to wander around. I remember stopping at more than one of these types of establishments and ordering some of my favourite beverages.   :toast:

At a party recently, I rediscovered one of these former favourite beverages. I noticed my friend Lisa had a bottle of ApfelKorn sitting on her counter. I asked her where she got it, and she told me that a private liquor store downtown carried it. She had asked them to bring it in for her, and so they’ve been doing so for years.

As I took my first drink of Apfelkorn since the 80s, I was immediately taken back to Berlin. I remember sitting in the front yard of my aunt’s house, and watching the planes fly overhead as they were landing at Berlin Tegel Airport. Maybe I had had too much Apfelkorn, but I seem to remember those planes being so close, that you could almost touch their landing gear.

Now there was no Sax Pub in Berlin, but there were lots of places at the time that had live music with saxophones. Unfortunately I don’t remember the names of either the clubs, nor the bands we saw. (The early 80s are really kinda’ a blur for me.)

Now with regards to the Slovenian Sax Pub, has anyone seen anything like this anywhere else? I think it would be a lot of fun to do a theme-based pub like this. I have never wanted to own a public house, but if I did, you know it would be called something like The Bassic Sax Pub, or maybe The Bassically Saxy Public House.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

    1. I haven’t been back to Berlin since the wall came down. My dad was from Berlin, so his family lived there. I spent a lot of time there, but don’t feel I ever really “lived” there. My official place of residence was always Stuttgart, and that is where I still have family. Sadly I haven’t seen them for years either.

As far as names goes, I can’t remember the names of clubs I played in while sober 10 years ago. 😳 The 80s, with my heavy alcohol consumption—luckily there is no genetic predisposition to alcoholism in my family, or I’d likely be an alcoholic now  —really passed in a blur. I did have jobs, went to university, got established in my career, but on my off time, I could be found at any one of the many establishments around where I lived. All in all a stereotypical German. :toast:
