Vintage Arnold Brilhart Ligature On eBay

I saw this a few weeks ago but didn’t notice if it sold. Now that it’s back, it’s a safe to assume it didn’t.

This vintage, AB alto ligature on eBay, is described like this by the seller:

These are the rarest, most collectible vintage ligatures anywhere.

This particular one is the holy grail.

I have only seen two AB alto ligs show up on ebay in all the years I have been selling here, aside from the ones I’ve sold.

I have seen and sold a few of the tenor and alto AB ligs for $1200 on ebay in the past.

Do you need a $995 ligature to get a great sound ……..NO, but collectors go CRAZY for these ligs. They show up on ebay once every few years.

This is for the collector who is looking for super rare items.

Quinntheeskimo bought a vintage Brilhart lig a several months back for over $2000 on ebay, and Junkdude sold one for over $1400.

Neither of those ligs were the infamous AB lig. They were the black delryn screw ligs like Kenny Garrett uses. (I have those here too) 🙂

Brilhart made the white reedplate lig with the black delryn screws, black reedplate lig with the black delryn screws, double B lig with 2 BB screws, regulare 2-screw lig thats says ARNOLD BRILHART on it, an English single screw lig with the Brilhart microphone logo on it, and this, the AB lig with one “A” screw and the other “B” screw.

These “AB” screws stood for Arnold Brilhart.

This is stamped SA on the side.

The AB ligs are the most sought after by the collector…..BY FAR.

Congrats to the buyer.

I find it interesting that anyone would even attempt to sell something like this during the current economic times. Vintage saxophone prices in general, have dropped from where they were 12 months ago. I can’t imagine spending nearly $1000 for a vintage ligature at this point in time. But heh, I’m just a starving musician, not a collector. Perhaps they’re still flush with cash.

I wish the seller luck in the auction. These ligs are a cool piece of saxophone history, and hopefully some of them will be preserved for future generations.

The auction for this vintage, AB alto ligature ends on July 28. The Buy It Now price is $995.00. At the time of writing there were no bid yet on the lig.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

  1. I realize I forgot to update this post with the auction results. The lig didn’t sell. Surprised? Not really I guess.

It also didn’t sell the next time around when the seller tempted potential buyers with a “BRAND NEW MORGAN EXCALIBUR 6EL alto mpc” and a “original Brilhart streamline cap” to use with the $995 ligature. (If you want to see that auction, just click on the original link and you should see it… That is unless the item has been listed again.)

Maybe it’s a case of needing money, and he’s not ready to start selling off horns? While the AB ligature might be a piece of nostalgia, it’s probably (functionally) replaceable.

I’d sell any horn I’ve got except one. While most of them are adequate, none of them are great. Therefore they’re replaceable. Still if I needed to raise funds I’d be more inclined to sell off mouthpieces, ligatures, and other various bits before I turned to selling instruments.
