On this weblog I’ve tried to show some of the more interesting saxophonic art that I’ve happened across during my online travels. This morning I found perhaps the most interesting sculpture that I’ve seen to date.
crosville posted this photo of a rather fascinating—if not perhaps ominous—saxophone player that he saw in North Wales.
Ars gratia artis!

The plaque on the base of this sculpture tells us that the title of this piece is Sax, and that the artist’s name is David Dewis. It provides the artist’s contact information including website, email, and phone number. (Because I have optimized this image for the web, please check the original full size version on Flickr, to read the plaque for yourself.)
When I checked out Dewis’ website, I did indeed find a photo of this sculpture. The image is currently located under Public Art & Commissions.
From this angle, The Sax’s details are a little easier to make out.

Apparently the sculpture is made of waxed steel. I am curious to know how tall this piece is though. It gives the impression of being quite big, but without a reference, one is left to wonder.
When I lived in Fredericton, NB, I had a friend whose husband was an artist who worked with steel. His sculptures were scattered throughout the region, and were really quite unique.
I had always thought about getting him to do a sax-related sculpture for our yard. Looking at these photos of The Sax, I somewhat regret that I did not commission him to make one for me.
