A Rare “Boozey” & Hawkes Oxford Sighting In Canada: And Yes, It Could Be Yours

I think most of us have heard the expression: The saxophone is an easy instrument to play, badly. Well the following ad I happened to notice in Edmonton’s Kijiji, illustrates how one would-be saxophone player soon discovered this for himself. Apparently however, playing saxophone isn’t the only thing this seller finds difficult. 😉

Alto Sax- Perfect, re-done everything( dampers, seals)

This is A BOOZEY & HAWKES Oxford ,Alto Sax with original matching case. All perfect because I spent 400.00 on getting it that was. all new seals and dampers. Im not a genius when it comes to brass but everything that could be done, got done. They told me they straightened it as well. the case is flawless with reeds, cleaning stuff, the pipe cleaners and the other cleaning tools. all new cork, wherever cork was( mouthpiece). It might be a bit older but this sax is like it was bought yesterday. I grabbed it from an estate sale and I play a bunch of things( guitar, piano, bass, beat mixing and that stuff) I thought it ould be easier once I got the hang of it. It was not easier and I never got the hang of it. My mouth almost fell off trying to practice and my lips were mu,b for a week from the reverberation off the reed. I dont think I was doing it right, so here we are. If you need a sax, take this one. especially if you are just messing around and want to learn. theres some books with sheet tab and a dvd on how to should your mouth on sax reeds as well. Im going back to my easy safe guitars.

Mmm… Last time I checked, Boozey & Hawkes spelled their name Boosey. It’s hard to make out in the blurry shot of the engraving though, so perhaps the engraver was thinking about his upcoming AA meeting just before engraving this sax.  😆

Of course you’ve by now noticed that this is not an alto. I wonder if the books and DVD you get with the sax, jive with the sounds coming out of the end of the horn? Hey, I’m just asking.

As far as the reverberation of the reed goes, if this seller tried to play it the way he’s photographed it for sale, I think we all know why he had that extra reverb.

I think nothing screams: get a teacher to help you get started the right way, like this ad this. It also yells: proof read your text before you post your classified ads online. 😉

BTW, the seller is asking $675.00 for this sax. And just in case anyone is interested, it is a Kohlert stencil saxophone. Despite the blurriness of the photos, it is clearly identifiable by the bell to body brace, and shape of the left pinkie cluster.

Oxford and Edgware were the names that Kohlert stencilled onto their student model Bixley saxophones for Boosey & Hawkes. Oxford was the stencil name sold here in Canada. If you’d care to read more about this, check out the model breakdown page on SaxPics.

    1. That’s a Pierret. Totally different animal of course, and they are also a pro horn, rather than a student model.

Nice looking, and those are very hard to come by. I wonder if it’s in good shape?

Is it currently on eBay Thomas? Or on a Swedish auction site somewhere?

I wonder how long it will take for someone to point that out to the seller :devil2: :devil2:
You need the smiley face that is rolling on the floor laughing (thats what I did when I read this add.)
