The Birth Of The Saxophone?

There is an intriguing sculpture in Dinant, Belgium, which is located very close to the house where Adolphe Sax used to live. I haven’t been able to find out any information about the sculpture—such as who the artist is, or when it was commissioned—but it definitely has an fascinating theme. Perhaps one might call it The Birth of the Saxophone. If anyone knows anything about this sculpture, please chime in and let me know.

In this photo by Zephyrinus you see the sculpture from the front. Unfortunately Zephyrinus didn’t provide a larger resolution photo so we’re left trying to make sense of this jumble of human limbs, torsos, and saxophone parts.

Soul of Beer took a photo of this sculpture from another angle, so we get a better view of the nonsensical nature of this art work. This photo is also much larger, which allows us to see the detail that has gone into this work.

I’m left wondering: Did whoever commission the work refuse to pay the artist the remainder of the monies owed, and the artist simply stopped working on the sculpture? Or, did the artist die midway through the project? Or, is this the way the sculpture was supposed to look? I’m guessing most likely it was the latter.
