What Key Is This?

I spent yesterday afternoon at a friend’s place in Vancouver. This friend is a vintage sax enthusiast, and has in his possession at the moment, an alto with an interesting key that I haven’t seen before on a vintage horn.

Although it might be easy enough to figure out what it does, it’s quirky enough that I thought I’d throw out a challenge and ask if anyone could identify the following:

  • What make & model of saxophone this is.
  • What key this is.

The first correct answer will win you bragging rights. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not nearly as obscure as the Oscar Adler Triumph that we discussed a couple of weeks ago. 😉

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

  1. @Matt: Well, you’ve got most of it right. It is a King, but it isn’t a soprano. It is an alto. Specifically, it’s a Voll True.

@Jim: Yes, there are a few other rods sticking out. I noticed it today when I started to work on the photos for Bassic Sax Pix. Kevin will fix them when he tweaks the horn. It needs some work.

I loved your story about the Grafton. Sad for the horn, better for the show though. (But only if you’re doing something with a bit of a comedic twist to it.)

      helen..yes, I play mostly with a jazz-based comedy band..
events like the exploding Grafton are not usually planned though..
we did have an exploding baritone sax at one time but after a few years there wasnt enough of it left to explode..
      insurance got tighter too.
      thanks..jim

Helen…which key are we talking about here?
they all look a bit odd to me..

I do know that if your friend doesnt pay attention to that rod which appears to be unscrewing itself, then they’ll all fall on the floor, as happened to me on Spanish TV when my Grafton disassembled itself.
They thought it was a trick and demanded that I do it every take..
    bless
