Little Richard’s Horn Section

As so often seems to happen, this morning what I find myself writing about is very different than the idea I started out with.

This morning’s idea was very simple: I was going to find a nice photo on Flickr. With the holidays that just happened, I was sure someone uploaded something interesting.

After pouring through what seemed like thousands of Flickr pics, something finally jumped out at my. However, it wasn’t at all what I expected.

bunky’s pickle has uploaded some interesting album covers to the photo sharing site. However, it was this pic of Little Richard and his horn section, that caught my eye.

I did some research and found out that that album was released in July 1958. The front of the album looked like this:

And it included the following songs:

Side 1

  • Keep A Knockin’
  • By The Light Of The Silvery Moon
  • Send Me Some Lovin’
  • I’ll Never Let You Go
  • Heeby-Jeebies
  • All Around The World

Side 2

  • Good Golly Miss Molly
  • Baby Face
  • Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey
  • Ooh! My Soul
  • The Girl Can’t Help It
  • Lucille

Looking through the list you’ll see a number of tunes that were released as singles. I’ve noted Keep A Knockin’ before, so this time let’s take a listen to Good Golly Miss Molly.

Like on Keep A Knockin’, the tenor solo on Good Golly was played by the legendary Lee Allen. According to John Laughter and Steve D. Marshall, Good Golly Miss Molly peaked at the #10 position on the Billboard Charts.¹

    Correction;

It was not Lee Allen on “Keep a Knockin'”. That is Grady Gaines. Lee Allen is playing on “Good Golly Miss Molly”.
