I was looking through all of my draft articles this morning, and happened across this one from nearly a year ago. I remember noticing the following photo on Flickr, and thinking that I should write about it.
There was simply something about this anorexic-looking, sax player—or is it a rothophone player?—that caught my eye.
Sax man

Perhaps it was the sculpture’s extreme build—especially its height—that was so interesting to me. The tiny feet remind of Barbie, whose body shape could not possibly be supported by the size of her feet… If you know what I mean. 😉
Although I’m not a real Sci-Fi fan, certain alien lores have always held a fascination for me, and this sax player does have a somewhat alien look to it. Perhaps in this alien world, the saxophone never caught on, but the rothophone became the King of Jazz?
Valerie Everett doesn’t indicate where she took this photo in 2006. However, the sculpture is 1 in a set that makes up a band, and is standing in front of some kind of brick wall with lettering.
The lettering behind the other sculptures reads: The Gardens of Canal Court Apartments. Some quick googling turns up an address on Canal Court South Drive, Indianapolis, IN. Google street view confirms that these sculptures are indeed in front of this apartment complex.
There are some very interesting, alien-type, saxophone-playing sculptures out there, that people have captured and posted on Flickr. Remember these guys? How about this fellow? Then there’s this nightmarishly, Sci-Fi creature from the UK.
Are there any interesting sculptures where you live that have saxophones in them? Or have you taken photos of any saxophone sculptures in your travels?
Nabbed for my Facebook profile pic this week. Thanks Helen. :O)
Mmm… Does bear a resemblance to a sax player I know from the Seattle region. 😉 Enjoy the portrait shot Gandalfe. 😈
