Have you been wanting a saxophone lamp, but do you want something different? Are you not wanting the same old, same old, or a tacky lampshade? Well how about this innovative saxophone lamp….

I saw this innovative saxophone lamp during one of my regular eBay visits recently. A seller in Estonia currently has it listed up for auction.
Now I wouldn’t buy a lamp that was built in Europe, regardless what the seller says:
Old russian saxophone design table lamp.
Weight with postament: 7 Lb 10 Oz(3.45 kg.)
H=62 cm.(25″)
transformer :220/12 volts.
Lamp :12 volts
can use transformer 110/12 volts.
However, this design gives us ideas of how to make an innovative saxophone lamp out of old saxophone bodies—bodies that otherwise are headed for the scrap metal yard.
I am curious though, how stable this lamp is. The base would have to be fairly heavy to keep the lamp from toppling over.

I really like the idea of the light coming from inside the bell of the horn.

OK, so it won’t be a reading lamp, but it will add nice ambient lighting.

This particular saxophone happens to be an old Russian alto…

… but you could also do this with any old sax you had kicking around. I can think of lots of beater horns that would make fine lamps, and not all of them are old. 😈

Now if you live in Europe, or if you don’t mind taking a risk with finding a transformer that works here in North America, you might want to know that this auction ends on July 16. The seller has set the opening bid at $250.00 US. There were no bids yet, at the time of writing.
Since I don’t jack around with electricity, if I were interested in this lamp, I’d get my friend, who is an electrician, to look at the auction for me, and tell me if this would work or not.
Now it just so happens that I have been working on an art project involving a junker saxophone body. When its done, it will be an innovative saxophone lamp as well, but it will also be much more. More on that some other day, when my project is completed. Here’s a teaser though, if you live locally, you can see it on display already, in the show window of a downtown shop that belongs to a friend of mine.
Update: Still for sale… Current price is $230.00 BIN, and yes it’s still the same seller peddling it.
Update: This interesting saxophone lamp from eBay didn’t sell with an original starting price of $250.00, and a BIN of $370.00. It’s now on eBay again, but this time the seller dropped the starting bids to $190.00, with a BIN price of $270.00. No bids yet. The current auction is set to end on August 30.
I picked up a set of 3M adhesive LED strip lights to try. They might be a good choice, but they were not cheap. A 1 metre (approx. 3′) long set of lights, with a transformer was $39.99. As it turns out, I will need to return it and get the 2 metre long set, which costs $54.99.
Now that my first project alto is almost done, I have 2 more altos, as well as 1 bell and bow only, to work with. Let’s see if I come up with any bright ideas. 💡 😉
Kidding aside, I do already have an idea for my next sax. I’m doing some research into the project idea already.
As far as the current project goes, I’ll have a proper write-up (with pics) up as soon as it is complete.
Even a Curvy Sop would need a little base weight as top heavy as the bow and bell could make it turned on its head. An old floor lamp base could work well for an alto or even a tenor.
I think a variation could be to use a wall mount swing arm for a monitor/lcd tv and secure it with a bolt through the neck strap ring. And of course use an LED Spot Light bulb so it won’t get the bell hot.
