Ever Seen a Fire Sax?

On May 13 I wrote about the Flame-O-Phone that Stefan Zeniuk has built. It is a real baritone saxophone with an addition that allows the player the emit a real flame up to 5 feet tall.

Then a few days ago I saw this image on Flickr, which is taking the concept of a fire sax to a whole new level…

Sax on Fire

fire sax, saxophone image, flames in the shape of a saxophone, art photography

Photography by Janne Poikolainen  Source: Flickr

Poikolainen doesn’t mention on the Flickr page how the fire sax was generated. Anyone want to take a stab at explaining it? Certainly Googling “how to create fire sculptures”, turns up lots pages in both text and image results—as does “photographing fire”.

Perhaps if I spent the time necessary to pour through some of the hundreds of pages and images of Google results, I would find the out how this fire sax was created… or not.

So if you’ve got any ideas how Janne Poikolainen might have created this photo, feel free to chime in. Photographing flames is not something I’ve tried, and given my healthy fear of fires, not something I’m likely to try anytime soon.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

    1. That’s a good question. Last I heard he’s still playing, and was doing something to support a CD he released—but that was awhile ago. Honestly, he never made it onto the radar screen here in North America, so his name never appears in the media at all. The only reason I heard about him was that I research current saxophone topics, and at the time I wrote about him, he was was current and being written about in the British press.

A quick Google search turned up his website on which he has an events page. There are a couple of shows noted there ATM: one for June and another for September. You’ll also see all the usual Twitter, facebook, and other social media links there as well. It appears he’s doing his best to stay in touch with his supporters and fans.

      Hope this helps…helen
