Today we celebrate the birth of the man who invented what is the most popular wind instrument in the world. Adolphe Sax was born 205 years ago on this day in Dinant, Belgium.
Here are some things we can do to celebrate this historic milestone in saxophone history.
- Use the hashtag #SaxophoneDay in our social media posts
- Play and listen to some saxophone music
- If you’re a sax player, pick up your sax and play it. It doesn’t matter how good or bad your are: Just do it 😉
- If you know a sax player: hug them
- If your partner is a sax player: kiss them
- If you’re planning a romantic dinner tonight, nothing sets the mood more than some romantic sax… Hey, just saying…
- And finally, quietly thank Adolphe Sax for giving the world a precious gift: the gift of an instrument that has the ability to convey emotion and feelings like none other. That is of course the reason the saxophone is the instrument likened most closely to the human voice.
Here is, without a doubt, my favourite tenor sax ballad. Sadly Gato Barbieri is no longer with us either. He was able to bring out the saxophone’s emotive side like none other.
Hello Helen,
thanks for the answer.
I’m not new here – I have your great blog in my feed reader for a long time.
I own only one vintage tenor: a Conn 10 M

Ooops, I’ve missed it … too late …
What an interesting instrument in the picture: what is it?
Best,
Klaus
Hello Klaus. Welcome to my site.
It is an Olds Super tenor. It is a very rare saxophone. Only 2,000 altos and tenor were ever made, and it is estimated that only 200 remain in existence–fewer tenors than altos. This one is museum quality. I had it restored by my sax tech 2 years ago.
The Olds Super was made by the Olds Company in Los Angeles, CA for only a couple of years. This one is from 1939. Although they resemble Martin saxophones, they were not made by Martin. The company did however, employee Martin designers and craftsmen to build the Super.
Great choice with Gato the Cat
