A Beautiful G.H. Hüller Bachus Tenor For Auction

There’s a G.H. Hüller tenor on eBay right now that I must admit, did trip by G.A.S. my switch yesterday. However, after some sober thoughts I realized that: 1) I don’t need another tenor, and 2) Shipping damage to such a lovely horn would be a real shame, and I know no one near Düsseldorf who could go and pick it up for me personally.

This tenor is really quite interesting, because the model name engraved on the bell, Bachus, is not one that I’ve seen associated with G.H. Hüller before.

According to Uwe Ladwig, during the 1930’s, when the company was the largest saxophone manufacturer in Germany, their models were the: Imperial, Artist, Olymp, and Orpheus. (Although most G.H. Hüller horns on Bassic Sax Pix have no model names engraved on them whatsoever.)

Perhaps this Bachus tenor was made post-WWII, and it was one of horns that wasn’t sent to the Soviet Union as part of Germany’s war reparations. Whatever the case, this is how the seller is currently describing this horn on eBay:

A wonderful alto [huh?] saxophone G.H.Hüller silver-plated

This good piece is fur enthusiasts, collectors, and die-hard musicians.

G.H.Hüller (Gottlieb [sic, it was Gottlob] Hermann Hüller) built saxophones since approximately the 1920s. The company is world-renowned for its build quality and fancy engraving.

The case is in good condition (for its age), and the saxophone is also in very good condition. It is fully functioning!

You get everything you see in the photos!

I especially love that gray accessory pouch. I wonder if any of those reeds are used.  😉

This incredibly lovely, vintage sax has nearly all the features we are accustomed to seeing in G.H. Hüller horns. It has rolled tone holes, a microtuner neck, a G# trill key, fork Eb, and the D resonance key. What it doesn’t have, is a high D/D# trill key, and that interesting bis Bb roller key that most G.H. Hüller horns had.

If you’d like to read more about the G.H. Hüller company, check out their page on my website. There you’ll find some information about the D speaker or resonance key, as well as general info about the company itself.

If you are interested in the Bachus tenor currently up for auction on eBay, the Buy It Now price is shown as €999.99, which eBay estimates to be $1,338.09 US. The dealer’s store page shows the auction running for another 27 days from today (Feb. 09, 2013).

Currently there is 1 offer on this horn already. Oh, and BTW, I will not be bidding on this sax. I have never bid on a horn that I have written about on eBay, and never will.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

  1. Update: Well yet another horn that didn’t sell on eBay. After 3 offers, the seller ended the auction prematurely. The usual reason was given:

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available.

@Stefano: I don’t know how I missed your comment earlier. I’m so sorry. You’re absolutely correct. The 870 indicates the horn is French standard pitch.
