On April 22, Deception was extremely pleased to be asked to open the 2008 Arty Awards. The Arty Awards are handed out annually by the Abbotsford Arts Council to individuals and businesses that have contributed to artistic life in Abbotsford.
For me, the funniest part of the evening was getting to say to people, “No, I’m not a drunk, I just play one on stage. But seriously, I have a balance disorder. If you don’t believe me, my cane is in the wings!” But all joking aside, although the show was only 30 minutes long, the lighting, commotion, and ambient sound pushed me to the verge of what I’ve described to my neurologist as a “neurological overload”.
By the end of it, I was pretty disoriented and struggling with symptoms. All and all, it was a very long 30 minutes for me. Art, Gary, Steve, and Art’s friend Rick were great though in making sure that all I had to do was show up with my own gear and play. They took care of all the quick set ups and take downs. I was pretty much useless for anything other than playing. Luckily, I have my own roadie for my gear. Thanks Marge! You’re a great sport.
