The Olds Super is an enigma that the majority of players and techs have not seen in real life. Some claim it was made by Martin. History would indicate otherwise, although Martin employees were involved in its design and manufacturing. Rumours abound that a ship sank carrying all but 200 of them. Still other rumours note that they were designed for the military, and all that are out in public, were never intended for non-military sales.
What is the true story? I have contacted Olds in an effort to uncover the truth.
In the meantime, what we do know is that in total only approx. 2000 altos and tenors were ever built. (More altos than tenors.) It is unclear how many really still remain. They were built for only 2 years: 1939 & 40.
What is clear though, is that they are arguably the most beautifully saxophones ever built.
